import comp into DR

PostThu Nov 24, 2022 5:13 am

I have a 4 sec comp made in Fusion in UHD 30fps
I imported a 4 sec comp in the middle of the timeline in DR.
the comp worked for only 1 sec and then no animation.
the timeline in the fusion tab shows starting at 90 sec and going to 120.
I looked at the nodes and everything looked fine.

I deleted and reimported the comp at the beginning of the timeline and comp animated fine for full 4 sec

this seems like a bug that you cannot import a comp in the middle of the timeline or I am missing something.

You "import" assets into a Project.

You "add" or "insert" assets to a timeline.

To clarify, are you actually importing that Fusion comp? Was it made in another project and exported for use elsewhere?

Are are you just adding a Comp you made in this project to the timeline?

I made the comp in Fusion.

I then added a Fusion Comp to the DR timeline and then imported the comp from the Fusion file.

I'm still confused.

"Import" means to bring something into the project that wasn't there before. Anything you build in Fusion can't be "imported" into the same project because it's already there.

Are you actually importing something here?

Can you load a comp from within the Fusion page?

Blackmagic makes a Fusion app, I made the comp in the Fusion app.
I would say Fusion tab when referring to Fusion tab in Resolve.

Yes, you can import a Fusion comp file created in Fusion into the Fusion tab in Resolve.

Or you could try VFX Connect.

Now that we understand what the OP is doing - can we explain why the time code of the Fusion clip is offset. I have not tried this, nor would I because there are too many differences between Fusion Studio and the Fusion page in Resolve (not the least of which is the limited support for codecs in the Loader node of Fusion within Resolve) so the prescribed way would be to use VFX Connect as Uli says.

Provided you have taken into account the limited codec support for Loader nodes back in Resolve, loading a comp into the Fusion page should work, I would think. Sorry I can't be of help.

Isn't VFX Connect for sending footage from Resolve to Fusion?

I am not doing that. I am importing a Fusion file into Resolve Fusion tab.

It supports roundtripping. I always start by choosing the clip and its in and out in DR, though.

I am not doing that. I am importing a Fusion file into Resolve Fusion tab.

I tried the workflow you are using and it worked fine for me. I was able to create an empty Fusion clip in Resolve and then I double-clicked on it and used File > Import > Fusion composition... to select the .comp file I create in Fusion Studio. I could then add this Fusion composition to a timeline. In your case, perhaps you added the Fusion composition to the timeline before you performed File > Import > Fusion composition...?

I must admit that I didn't play with it that long to determine if there was a time/frame offset.

when you write "create an empty Fusion clip in Resolve"
in Edit tab did you drag from the effects toolbox the fusion composition to the timeline first and double click that?
that is what I did.

the reason I imported the fusion comp is because fusion had issues rendering so I thought maybe it would work better in resolve.
but I have seen people say resolve grinds to a halt when trying to do fusion effect inside the timeline.
better to render out of fusion? or import comp and have it render the whole project at the same time?

No, I created a new Fusion Clip using the context menu in the bin. Then I double-clicked it which takes you to the Fusion page where I then imported the comp. I then returned to the edit page and dragged the Fusion clip to the timeline from the bin. Try it and see if that makes any difference. It shouldn't but you never know.
