Sudden render crash, and after that framerate speedup

PostFri Nov 25, 2022 5:12 pm

Okay this is really a strange one.

I render a feature film and at a certain point in the last third Resolve just crashes.
It says something like "couldn't get frame".
Always at the same exact point, so I looked at the footage at this point - tried to play it.
It plays, but like in 4x speed.
Closing and restarting Resolve doesn't help, but restarting the whole machine - than the clips play in normal speed, but still crashing when rendering.

Those clips play just fine outside of Resolve though (media player).

I tried all the usual stuff like reimporting etc. - no dice.

Rendering an other feature as we speak, and it seems fine (so far).
So it's probably not a hardware - but a project problem (the material is on an other drive though).

This project had no trouble before I updated to 8.1 - did an update after the second crash to 18.1.1 - but that didn't help ether. I'm on Windows.

Here are the logs:

I told you so :-)

Go into Preferences>User>UI Settings and uncheck the two Stop options.

Report back.

Meaning with both Stop options unchecked, the render still crashes?

I can confirm this issue as well with 18.1.1. Though the crash I experience is just Davinci closing, no crash report. If I watch the video render, it always happens in the last quarter of the render (76%, 81%, 89%, etc.) and the few times my eyes have been watching, it seems to happen when it hits a 120p section, or a transparent png file or possibly anything on the b-roll track. There is a mix of 10bit and 8bit video, mostly 30p but some 120p.

Now, I've selected the second half of the file with 120p sections and rendered it, and that half works, and the first half works but if I do the whole file, it won't render. I've managed to get the file to render but had to remove a transparent png and one 120p clip in the last 25% of the video.

For reference, I've done about 25 videos on this computer, and it has worked fine. The only change was the addition of Panasonic GH6 5.7k 30p and 120p video.

System
Windows 10 on Gigabyte Aero
Nvidia 3080 (Driver: 30.0.14.7239)
32 gb ram
Intel I9 11980HK

Got it.

Might have to wait for staff to look at the logs on this one.

Yes, at my project it's also somewhere between the 70% and 80% mark.
No PNGs or high speed footage at this place though.
But it's not native camera material, it's coming from VFX (Cineform).

I rendert this project many times before I updated to 18 and it was never a problem.

I am facing exactly the same situation : render goes to 70 or 80 % and Resolve hangs. (W10)
Two different behaviors :
- white screen with a windows error message
- or Resolve stops immediately
In version 18.1 no problem.
On my laptop I have the same version. I faced exactly the same problem with the same project.
I tried to uninstall the 18.1.1 (seems OK) and to install 18.1...impossible !
Installation failed : impossible to install control panels ???
I didn't find any solution to fix that or very, very complex system files manipulation.
I only use this laptop for testing and not for editing project, I think the only simple solution will be to reinstall W11 and Resolve 18.1. Too bad !
I hope Blackmagic will fix quickly this problem (even if a lot of people are satisfied with th 18.1.1)
