Compression artifacts EXR import

PostTue Nov 29, 2022 1:51 am

When I import an 32bit EXR sequence (rendered in C4D with no compression), certain highlights have weird pixelated compression artifacts.

Please see artifacts around helmet lights in attached image.

These artifacts are not present in Fusion 18 Studio or After Effects.

Looks like ringing artifacts from rescaling filter. You can change the filter type in project settings.
I do stuff.

100% sure this is due to the rescaling. By default Resolve uses sharper with increases contrast at edges. Because this is a linear exr the highlight has a really high value. thepixel next to it is relatively dark, therefore there is a lot of contrast already. increasing that contrast even further results in a really dark value as you can see.

change it to something like bilinear or bicubic for better results

Got another one now:
Resize filter has no effect.

After effects is using 16bit exr render out of C4d. With a Resolve generated LUT applied on top.

Resolve has the same color correction that I used to generate the lut for after effects. Note the heavy compression artifacts in the resolve screen grab vs the clean screen grab out of After effects....

Not the cleanest render in the world but Resolve shouldn't introduce weird artifacts.

I will use the [custom/mitchell] is a better smoother scaler.

in the Color management settings scroll down to LUTs and change the interpolation mode from trilinear to tetrahedral. does that help?

Thanks. Resolve grade isn't using Luts, it's using Colorlab plug in. But artifacts are still there if I deactivate the plug in node.

so without any corrections or color management there are artefacts? can you send over the exr for testing?
