"Black Sun Highlight Correction" not available in R18

PostSun Dec 04, 2022 1:12 am

Hi everyone!

Can't find it anymore (in Color TL thumbnails, cf. screen capture) or via the Help menu, although the manual still mentions it. Had disappeared in 18.1, not back in 18.1.1.
Please, put it back soon! ;)

It looks like this particular feature has been removed from Resolve >18.0.3

See here the answer from Peter Chamberlain:

Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thx a lot, Robert.
Don't know why I didn't find myself this entry when I looked for this topic.
Waited too long to come to the forum after having mentioned it on the Facebook DaVinci Resolve Professional Users Group on November 20th.

I've no special insight into Resolve development, but...how often does a feature intentionally removed from software get put back?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Maybe you know more than us, Jim?!
I've read nowhere it was intentionally removed.
It looks like a bug to me and others, but I may be naive! ;)
Even though it was intentional, why not asking as it is still useful…

What Peter didn't mention is whether or not this feature will return. His response, above, is a bit ambiguous in my mind, but it does indicate that if you need this feature now, you need to revert to a prior release of Resolve.

Indeed, Steve, but it'd be rather surprising a functionality especially made to get rid of artefacts created by the cameras of the same manufacturer is abandoned!!!

Those artifacts no longer occur. They got fixed in firmware a long time ago. Same with RED cameras.

That may be why the feature went away. It's no longer an issue with new footage.

What about legacy (archival) footage, though? Not that I know what I'm talking about as I have no idea that 'black sun highlight correction' is, lol.

Not all Blackmagic cameras could be fixed in firmware. The original Blackmagic Cinema Camera still has the issue.

I'm currently working on a feature with old footage from a BMD Production Camera 4K : some artefacts on the sun for 2 shots, but above all, a long night sequence with a character in the woods walking towards the camera with a flash light… so you can imagine I desperately need it!!!

Please bring back this feature. Why remove it?

There are still a lot of Production Camera 4K users. (And the 2.5K / Old Pocket).

Use another machine, install the older version of software, fix the shot and bring it to the new one. (As of it was a vfx)

Thx, Walter, that's exactly what I planned to do as a last resort…

Or they could just add it back. Why remove it in the first place? Makes no sense. One of the few Resolve disappointments...
