How do I crop a video and change the project's aspect ratio?

PostWed Dec 07, 2022 3:56 am

I'm new to video editing.

I have a video that looks like:
original.jpg
original.jpg (201.74 KiB) Viewed 202 times

I want to crop it like:
cropped.jpg
cropped.jpg (158.68 KiB) Viewed 202 times

And change the aspect ratio of the project to match the cropped area. In this case, you can see that the aspect ratio became more rectangular and less squarish. When I export the video, it should match the crop. I don't want black bars, and I don't want to zoom the video to fill the frame; instead I want to shrink the frame to fit the video.

How do I do this in DaVinci Resolve? Thanks.

A custom timeline resolution would do it.

For anyone new to Resolve, even editors experienced with other software, I recommend as a first step going through at least the Beginner's Guide.

The time you spend on that will almost certainly save you a lot of time and frustration later on.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
