Wanted to add on my experience to this thread since some of the posts here helped us pinpoint the issue, which in my opinion is a very annoying design flaw in how this program installs.
Our company got Resolve Studio 17 for certain members of our team, myself included. The way IT works at the company I'm at is that we are all non-privileged users. So, my account does not have admin privileges, meaning I have to get someone from our IT team to install Resolve on my account. We are on Windows 10. Here's what happened.
I accidentally had IT install the Free Version of Resolve. I'm still new to the software itself. It happens, but I'm glad it did, because it brought the issue described several times in this thread, to our attention. When the install started it asks for an admin log-in because I, again, can't install software myself. Once the credentials are entered, the install goes through fine. However, despite things like Blackmagic RAW Player, Speed Test, Control Panels, etc appearing in the start menu under recently installed...Resolve itself is nowhere to be found. It is not in the Blackmagic Design folder in the Start Menu and it's not on the Desktop. I thought to check the Program Files in the C: drive and sure enough. There it was. But I had to navigate to Program Files, then Blackmagic Design, then Resolve, and find the .exe, then make the shortcut for the desktop myself. I thought this was weird, but at least the software works now.
Again though, like I said, I accidentally had them install the free version and this is where things started to get really problematic. When we went to uninstall the free version, as others have mentioned, Resolve does not appear in the Windows Program list to uninstall even though it was in Program Files and has a fully working .exe file. And of course, Resolve won't let us install the Studio Version if the free one is installed (It acts as if Resolve is already installed, which...a free version of it is). So, we were stuck and about to throw in the towel until I came across this thread where it was mentioned you had to log-in as an administrator.
We gave that a shot and the same credentials that were used to give me access to install were then used to log-in from the IT Department. Sure enough, there's the desktop shortcut and the Start Menu items. Plus, it now appears in the list of Programs to uninstall. At this point, we had to uninstall from the IT Admin account, then switch back to my account to install the correct Studio version.
Again, the install goes through fine, asked for admin credentials, which IT provided, and once the install is complete Resolve is missing from the Start Menu and Desktop, and we had to go into Program Files, find the .exe file and then create our own shortcuts.
I will finish by saying that this has not been a problem for any other piece of software that has been installed on my account via IT. Adobe Creative Cloud, Blender, Audacity, VLC, etc. This was purely isolated to the Resolve installer as even the Control Panel, Speed Test, and RAW Player were available through the normal channels on my non-admin account.
I hope this helps isolate any issues for the developers. The way I usually experience an install like this is that it will still install to the account currently logged in, even if a separate admin account has to grant access. Very odd that Resolve will then only appear in said Admin account.
