Why do video tracks randomly become super tall?

PostThu Dec 08, 2022 11:48 am

I have a simple timeline. Footage on one video track, and occasional title generators on the track above it.

For some reason, when I click on one of the title-generator events on V2, the track will frequently become super-tall, pushing V1 down out of view. After that, there's no apparent way to shrink it back down to a usable vertical size. It's infuriating, because it makes the timeline area mostly unusable.

This was happening before the latest update, and continues after. Anyone else see this? Thanks.

When you click the spline icon on the text, the spline editor will open. You can collapse it again by clicking the spline icon once more. In your posted video, the spline editor appears to be empty. You may need to increase the timeline zoom level to see its contents.

Thanks for the replies. Apparently that was added in 18.1, because I just launched 18.0 on another system and that icon isn't there.

That is some bad UI. Why is that thing in there, when nothing is animated? Not to mention that it's already hard enough sometimes to select the edges of events, and transitions. Now there's more junk crammed in there to misdirect mouse-clicks.

That icon has been around for multiple versions, it only appears if you add a keyframe on the clip.

Here is a Resolve 15 video showing it in use.

Thanks. There's no animation on the events in my timeline, which is reflected by the emptiness of the exposed editor area.

The Spline editor appears when any Inspector values are changed, not when KF is added.

Far from junk. This is a very useful button.

Now if you want to talk about junk, let's work on a way to suppress the Windows taskbar from auto unhiding any time we want to do anything towards the bottom of the UI. The alternative is to surrender 5% of the screen to keeping it showing all the time even though there is literally a button on the keyboard to bring it up.

You'll get no argument from me on the hideous mess that is the current state of Windows.

I see no reason to clutter up every animated timeline event with the same button. Why not put a single instance of it in the track header? Especially when the hit areas in events are already crowded and sometimes nearly impossible to access.

The more you learn the software the less random things happen and respect for the UI grows.

Or disdain for the UI grows.

Critical thinking is your friend.
