Lumix RW2 RAW files (and converted DNG files) do not work

PostFri Jan 27, 2023 1:19 pm

Hi all,

I'm making this thread here to flag an issue that many Lumix timelapse photographers have.

If you want to create a timelapse using DaVinci Resolve (rendering out a sequence of image stills to a video file) using Lumix RW2 files (the Lumix RAW format) you do not get the correct colours in DaVinci Resolve.

An often touted, yet sadly wrong solution is to convert the RW2 files to DNG files using Adobe's DNG converter.

These DNG files also do not display the correct colours inside DaVinci Resolve.

I'm hoping someone has found a solution for this problem, or alternatively, I'm hoping that enough people chime in here so that the wonderful developers can implement support for this image format in a future update.

Thanks,
Matthew

My solution was to shoot timelapse from non-BMD cameras in JPEG.

It's just easier.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

That's entirely fine, if you're happy with 8-bit coded JPEGs.

This complaint is aimed at people striving for the highest possible quality of footage, including 12-bit HDR pipelines.

Nothing wrong with JPEGs, unless you want to create higher-end files.

I solved that by owning a Pocket 4K. ;)

Honestly, those are the only way ways I know to make Timelapse easy in Resolve.

Shoot JPEG, or BRAW.

I can shoot timelapse with other cameras just fine, you only need an older camera that is already supported. If you want the latest and greatest, you may have to wait or transcode. I'd use one of the softwares to handle RAW photography and doing a batch transcode to a good stills format like PNG or TIFF.
BTW, DNGs from my drone are coming in fine.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Shoot JPEG, or BRAW.

It's great that you can shoot timelapses easily using BRAW on your hardware, however, there are many reasons why you'd want to shoot RAW stills instead. Motion-control rigs, external timelapse controllers etc to name a few.

This thread is for the many people using Lumix cameras for timelapse photography (it's truly a great system for it), who would like to use the wonderful Resolve software.
Just a place to flag with the devs that there is a group of people waiting on this to be supported :)

Batch transcoding and other workarounds are an option, however, if the devs could implement proper support for an increasingly popular camera system that would be even better of course.

I have tested many workarounds, and for many brands, the transcode does indeed work, however for Lumix files it just doesn't.

FYI, this has been an issue for at least three years now (or whenever I got my first S1 camera. Just to flag that it's not necessarily a new hardware issue :)

I am able to transcode RW2 RAW file sequences to DNG in Adobe Bridge 2023 that open in Resolve. The timelapse sequence was shot on the Panasonic G9. Using Adobe DNG Converter and Lightroom did not seem to work.

try with dng converter from iridient
https://www.iridientdigital.com/

i discover it to convert correctly my fuji files to dng that adobe cannot read correctly without cause a lots of worm effects (so crazy artefacts).

it convert at today tons of raw and on their website you can found demo that convert to dng with in overlay a watermark. you can try if it give you right result.
