Resolve crashes while rendering but it's ok in editing

PostSat Jan 28, 2023 7:25 pm

I usually work without any issue while editing a project. I normally work at 1080p for snappier feedback but if i switch to 4K, while Resolve struggles to playback some complex gradings, it still is stable.
When i start rendering, the process usually goes on for a while (say 75% of the project) then resolve crashed because of insufficient video memory.
This leads me to "render in place" each clip before the final rendering. This avoids the rendering to crash.
Looks like there is some kind of memory leak that accumulates leaks while rendering leading Resolve to a crash. I'm working with a Quadro RTX with 8Gb video memory. Not huge but i guess that it should work for the small projects i usually work on.
The problem arises usually when i use temporal denoiser in each clip. I understand that temporal denoiser may be a resource hog but why does it works in editing and not in rendering, at the same resolutions?

There might be a memory leak, which only the developers can fix, but you could also have a thermal or a power supply issue.
Editing is allowing the hardware to cool down, while rendering is a constant load. Try to reduce the rendering speed under File -> Advanced.

I didn't know about this setting. Thank you i will give it a try.
Anyway i get a message dialog stating that there is a memory request that overloads the available graphics card capabilities. May be caused by thermal overload but sound strange in this case.

Thanks!

You probably have "Preferences > User > Playback Settings > Performance mode" activated. In that case it might downgrade the quality of image operations while editing/grading but will use full quality when rendering.

Might be worth considering a GPU with more VRAM.

Or, fewer frames in the TNR. (I never go over 3, and usually use only 2.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

@Roger: yes it' set to automatic. Now in understand better the behaviour.

@Jim: my set is two frames in the TNR for this project. I recently upgraded my laptop with a 8Gb VRAM card and tought it were enough for my usual projects. A new upgrade is not feasible in the near future, i'd have to adapt my rendering techniques to this limitation.

You could try a single frame radius to see if NR is the problem.
Another thing to try, which made all the difference in my test of a PC laptop with only 8 GB VRAM, would be rendering into Cineform and doing final compression separately.
Get the free GPU-Z and observe what happens with your VRAM before it’s crashing.
