Why don't I have the AV1 codec, please?

PostMon Jan 30, 2023 8:13 pm

I have the Studio version and a RTX 3090 graphic card however when I render my masterpieces I can't seem to find the AV1 codec.
Any idea why the codec is not available to me?

RTX 3090 only supports AV1 decoding (reading), I think... not encoding (writing).
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

Hi.

AV1 Encoding in not for GeForce RTX 3090, but only for GeForce the RTX 4080 series, according to:

https://developer.nvidia.com/video-enco ... matrix-new

NVENC - Encoding (Click to expand).

As shown in "Resolve 18 Supported Formats and Codecs":

https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... 8361163000

you can decode in AVI but not render in AVI.

They are talking AV!, as in A V ONE, not AVI. Some of the newest NVIDIA hardware supports AV! encoding.

Hi.

In July 2022
Supported Formats and Codecs.
From Marc's Wielage link

End of page 7:
'AV1
mov, mp4

Decode Yes, GPU accelerated,

Encode Yes, GPU accelerated on
Intel graphics.

That was in July 2022 and there is an uddate in November:

Software Update 11 Nov 2022
DaVinci Resolve 18.1 Update
About DaVinci Resolve 18
Codecs & I/O
'Hardware accelerated AV1 encodes in supported Nvidia systems.'

And RTX 4090 was launched in Oct 2022 and RTX 4080 was launched in Nov 2022.
I expect that at least RTX 4090 have hardware accelerated AV1 encodes.

I cant test it. May be others with a RTX 4080 series graphics card can test it and report back.

AV1 encodes work fine on supported cards, I tested on an RTX4090. The issue I have with it is that they only added it under the MP4 format, not QuickTime. This means we can't render with lossless audio and have to use AAC which isn't great in Resolve on Windows. It also means we can't render any audio at all on Linux.

Encoding doesn't work on current Intel CPU:s as they don't have it (up to 13th gen), but should work on their ARC GPU and possibly CPUs launching this year. I wish the document made that more clear. It just says "Yes, GPU accelerated on Intel graphics." which could be misunderstood to mean the integrated GPU.

Does the MOV container support AV1?

It's just a container so there shouldn't be any major issues. I suppose no-one wants to go ahead with a defacto standard before Apple has had their say. They've done some work on it within AVFoundation so I expect they will implement it at some point. slashCAM: Apple finally works on universal support for AV1 codec

Hi.

On January 5th, 2023 was nVidea RTX 4070 Ti with 12 GB vRam launched at $799.
And as I se it, do it also have AV1 hardware encoding.

According to this German nVidea link

https://www.nvidia.com/de-de/geforce/gr ... tx-4070ti/

NVIDIA Encoder - Alle technischen Daten anzeigen - AV1-Kodierung Ja

And in this WiKi Nvidia NVENC

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_NVENC

Can you at end of the table se that: 8th Gen AD104, AD103 and AD102 all have AV1.

Finally will I post a link to a review of the RTX 4070 Ti:

My INTEL ARC A770 Limited Edition 16GB supports AV1 De- and En-coding even in 8K.
And what a suprise it supports INTEL QuickSync De- and Encoding up to 8K H265 10Bit 444
Excellent GPU for 8K in Resolve.

Could you please share a little more with your experience with the ARC A770 in 8K H265 10Bit 444?

Do you see any problems during playline scrubbing?

Have you used it to render projects in 4K H264, how did it perform?

How about its performance in color correction?

I am considering using this card in a system that will feature a 13700K initially 32gb of DDR5 ram to handle 6K 29.97p, 200Mbps, 4:2:0 10-bit H.265 footage and I am very intrigued by the performance in Davinci of the ARC A770 and a 13th gen processor in tandem now that INTEL QuickSync works and the new driver from Intel was released.

Unfortunately Youtube and other sources has been of very little help, so any input you might have would be truly invaluable.

Puget benchmark GPU effects user results database is not favourable for the Arc. I considered it for a short while but performance seemed so below par that I wasn't convinced it could be improved significantly with time.

Hi Daniel,

here are my experiences with 8K Rendering in Resolve Studio:
1. RAM minimal 64 GB
2. VRAM minimal 16 GB
3. PCIe 4.0 or higher is good for performance
4. NVMe SSD PCIe 4.0 or higher

Your questions:

A: No problems what so ever
B: Yes, no problems with rendering
C: No problems

Currently there are Driver problems - but Intel is working on it.
I had ca. 6 driver versions and there are still bugs in it.

But Performance has improved signifantly. And the Driver implementation (INTEL ARC Control and
Rendering Overlay) is excellent.

Regards

Juergen

Why don't I see AV1 as an encoding option when I have a 4090 GPU? Do I need to be using the studio ready ready instead of the game ready driver?

You need the paid version of Resolve (I think, the release notes didn't specify) and you need to render to either the MP4 or MKV format. Not sure MKV was supported from the start but it is in 18.5 Beta.

Thanks. Seems strange considering it's an open source codec without any software or hardware license fee, and especially considering the hardware purchased for the feature. Any chance it'll make it to the free version eventually?

Like I said, I'm wasn't sure. But looking at the separate DaVinci_Resolve_18_Supported_Codec_List.pdf document it should be supported in the free version. Are you using an older driver perhaps?
