Mezzanine codec is the expression for a bunch of codecs, like DNxHR, Cineform (which I like under Windows) or ProRes (great for Mac). They are all available in the free version.
DNxHD is an older version. While it should work, I'd rather try DNxHR.
These Codecs have different levels of quality. For your purposes, DNxHR HQX 10-bit is plenty enough, or GoPro Cineform YUV 10-bit. If both of these crash your computer, there's a deeper problem. And don't save to the system disk, these exports can be very large.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
