No video only audio from large ProRes442 HQ file

PostFri Feb 03, 2023 3:06 pm

I have several QT .MOV files in ProRes422 HQ about 40 to 60 GB in size rendered from Final Cut 7 some 12 - 15 years ago. This morning I installed Da VInci 18 to my almost as new Mac Mini M2 pc running Ventura 13.2 OS.

Resolve plays only the audio from those ProRes422 but no video. I have tried to set all correctly at the project properties window (HD 25p etc) but to no avail. What gives? Resolve should have all ProRes codecs included.

MIght be something simple I have overlooked, please bear with me.

Are you running the Studio version of Resolve? Shouldn't matter on a machine with Apple silicon. Maybe you could upload a small sample to a file sharing site and place a link here for others to check?

Not sure 10 bit matters for ProRes (because all ProRes is 10 bit), but only for H.264/5.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

That's what I was thinking, too, Jim. If the OP could provide a link to sample media we could give it a go.

Have to fire up my 15 year old Mac Pro to be able to edit that material...

Will do maybe tomorrow.

Are you sure it's ProRes or an older Apple codec not supported any more? 15 years are an eternity in IT.

You can check with MediaInfo (free). Or, as suggested, post a sample to a cloud service and give us the link.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Apple Intermediate Codec was common 15 years ago. It's what FCP converted GOP media to upon ingest.

Exactly. And, AFAIK, AIC is not supported in DR.

So I started the old Mac Pro with FC7. Those files are actually Apple Intermediate, originating from HDV tapes.

Trying to convert into some sort of Quicktime HD, 20% done in 2 hours, estimated time remaining 9 hours with a 90 minute file...

Update tomorrow...

What are you using to transcode and into which codec? That sounds really slow, even for an older machine.

I loaded the 90 minute file into FC7 and just picked generic Quicktime conversion into 1920x1080 (what the material basically is). In the end it took about 9 hours to render it into a 25 GB file (60% reduction in size. 6x real time).

Material looks perfectly fine on Da Vinci. After some tweaks I rendered it for Youtube at same HD (DVR preset), which happened in about 15 minutes with the new Mac Mini M2, 6 times faster than real time.

Thus, approximately, the new Mac is about 36 times faster than the Mac Pro from 15 years back.

Problem solved in a roundabout way. I have only a few additional old files to convert, so this method works for now, unless somebody comes up with a solution to ingest them into DVR.

Thanks all.

Don't you have Compressor on your old machine? It should have come with FCP 7, IIRC.
Use it to convert to ProRes 422 HQ, it should be faster.
