Grading Virtual Production

PostWed Feb 08, 2023 10:55 am

I was looking for a workflow on grading virtual production output. I am going deep into multiple pathways and when I got to the grading part I ran into multiple options, with everyone saying their way is the best way to do it. All I got from the last several days of research is confused.

The 3 pathways I am trying to understand are:

1) Green screen to unreal engine

2) Green screen to Ultimatte to unreal engine ( to reduce the load of keying )

3) Using an LED Volume

I have been shooting on a green screen and then adding the background in post. This has always allowed me to grade both components to create a better match. Virtual production has changed all of this. So many say to grade on set, others say you grade afterwards using ACES, because unreal using ACES.

Can anyone share, or point to established pathways for me to research?

Thanks in advance.
