Dialogue Leveler for clips in the Edit page

PostWed Feb 08, 2023 7:01 pm

I seemed to have missed this until today. Just discovered Dialogue Leveler as in the Inspector (Edit page) can bounce the result with perfect sync into the clip's audio layer. Original exists on the bottom layer. The processed audio on the top layer seems devoid of stutters, jerks etc.

I am finding this ideal for dealing with just the odd clip here and there on the timeline.

To get to this option which is not obvious you need to select the Custom button at top right when open the Leveler then click the 3 dot menu top right and there is the Bounce Audio Effect option.

Ha! Sorry if everybody else already knew this!

That's pretty cool. I don't recall seeing that on the edit page. I know you can do something like that on the Fairlight page. Haven't used dialog leveller much yet. Thanks for posting.

Peter Chamberlain mentioned this some time ago in another thread.

My current multiple camera video tracks have about 16 audio tracks. Not sure what that’s going to look like after bouncing many audio tracks. I hadn’t tried this because I expected the effect to work in real time while rendering out the video. Maybe I’ll give it a try tomorrow anyway if the original contents are also preserved.

Important to mention that the bounced audio is stored in the location specified by “Save clips to” field of the Capture and Playback panel in Project Settings. To ensure it stays with the project I entered the path to my project folder.

Dialogue Leveler for clips in the Edit page

PostThu Feb 09, 2023 4:20 pm

Thank you, Claire. This bouncing audio worked for Dialogue Leveler, but not Voice Isolation. I have a short clip that begins with a loud voice, then a soft voice, and an average voice. After adding Voice Isolation, I ended up without being able to hear the loud voice at all, the soft voice was very good, and the average voice became soft. Tried lots of variations but not using Voice Isolation on the video as it’s a PITA if there ever was one, even after bouncing the audio effect!

After I apply either of the audio effects, I finish with Normalize Audio Levels to EBU R128 for the clip. The result for Dialogue Leveler is what one would expect, but even applying Normalize to the Voice Isolation was not efficacious as the first loud voice remained inaudible.

Hmm, that's a shame. I had not tried using Voice Isolation. I tried it just now on a some clips which have clear speech but low level wind noise. It worked as expected, no wind. Though this was a simple test and no other tracks.

It may be that it struggles when there are multiple mics and cameras and the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II recorder. I don’t ever use the MixPre’s MixL and MixR tracks but I use my mics as ISO tracks (isolated tracks). I also use a Sennheiser 416 MKH P48 recording XLR to my URSA Mini 4.6K.
