Best practice running Resolve 18 on a weaker pc

PostThu Feb 09, 2023 10:52 am

Hi!
Trying to learn Resolve 18 (coming from Adobe Premiere Pro and Elements).
Seem like a great software but I am noticing that it seems to be running muck more laggy and rough compared to Adobe Premiere Pro on my PC.

I know I am not running a performance machine here. It´s a simple HP notebook Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10310U CPU @ 1.70GHz 2.21 GHz and 16gb ram. Graphics is integrated intel uhd 6gb.

But it is struggling just playing back a 1920x1080p50 video in a timeline with matching resolution and framerate. This without any effects, overlays or graphics applied.

Running same material in Adobe Prempro plays noticeably smoother.

I havet tried tweaking according to some online tutorials I have found but notice little or no difference.

Is there any way to make this run better on my PC?

Thanks in advance for any input regarding this!

Are you using the free version or Studio? Studio supports more GPU accelerated decoding. What exact format are you using? See this document that lists the supported formats and if they are GPU accelerated on various platforms, and if Studio is required for support them.

On a low end Windows laptop with Studio and an AMD GPU it is necessary to generate use proxies / render cache at 1080p to be able to play acceptably. On a machine with a Nvidia 3050, it can play 4k60 4:2:0 H.265 at full speed with some colorspace transformations and grading going on.

If your sources are in H.264 or 265, convert them to DNxHR and try again.
But then, your GPU is really a bit too weak for DR. DR is using the GPU like no other NLE.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Hello!
I am back at this again and looking for more tips&trix to get DR to run as smoothly as possible on a windows using the free version.

Here´s where I am at:

We edit a lot of different types of footage of different resolultions and framerates (mostly 50,30 and 25 fps).

We need to make and use a setup of custom made title templates with effects that are keyframe controlled and made in Fusion page. Since the animation lenght are controlled by keyframes we need to chose one framerate to edit in all footage in (it is just not possible to make different versions of the titles for each and every framerate we may encounter). So we chose to make them for 1920x1080 50fps.

So with the above situation: how can we tweak DR to run as smoothly as possible while editing?

Right now it stutters even if I import footage with the right resolution and framerate matching the timeline, as soon as I add a title or even just a logo png on top video layer. This until the caching (or what it´s called in DR) is complete.

Yes, I am still a newbie :-)
Thanks in advance for any input!

From my experience, your PC is too weak to run Fusion comps on top of the already slow GPU. Working in a 1/4 proxy resolution for editing might work to make editing a bit smoother but eventually you will need to render (as you have discovered). Sorry, no other ideas.

Thanks for input!
Would getting a Studio license improve things?
We're mostly working with mp4 and mov files.

I don’t think a studio license would improve things because most of the extra studio features leverage the GPU and need quite a bit of power. My 2 cents. Cheers.

Try an older version of Resolve -- 14 or 15. These were far less demanding of the GPU and you might get away with it.

Second that. Would be plenty to learn and later apply when you hopefully can afford something stronger.
