freeze frame for a while

PostSun Feb 26, 2023 10:43 pm

Similar to viewtopic.php?f=21&t=160055&p=848877&hilit=freeze+freeze+frame+freeze+frame+#p848032 I'm wondering:

If I want to freeze a frame of a clip for some time, then continue with the clip, it seems I have to cut the clip into three pieces: 1:before_freeze, 2:freeze, 3_after_freeze

When I re-decide later to freeze a different frame, I can easily undo the freezing, but I'll have to undo the two cuts that separate the clip, too.

Can't here be an easier way that avoids cutting the clip into pieces?

I have some "live-action" clip where I want to freeze the action for some time to add an explanation (text) what will happen next, possibly multiple explanations...

Have you tried the Retime Curve?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Could you be a bit more concrete? I searched the reference manual for it, but could not find a description how to do or use it.

Right-click on the clip and select Retime Controls, there is a Freeze Frame option within the Retime Controls and you move the handles around to change the length and position of the freeze frame within the clip. No cutting required. :)

Here's a short video tutorial that shows how to do it.
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 CPU 3.20GHz
MOBO: ASUS PRIME Z370-A
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Yeah, I know!)
Audio: Audient iD14 USB Interface
Storage: Seagate SATA HDD

I actually applied the procedure, but I have one effect I didn't understand:
In your video the frozen area has no sound and the sound continues after the freeze frame.
That's very much what I would expect, but when I tried it video and audio track had different lengths afterwards. I had checked that they are linked.
What else could be the problem?

Make sure the "Linked Selection" button is also enabled. If this is disabled, then none of your links will work (it's a way to temporarily disable all links in your project).

Or you can manually select both the video and audio before doing the freeze frame.

As long as both the video and audio clips are selected at the time that you do the freeze frame, then it will work as you expect. If only your video clip is selected, then the audio clip won't freeze with it.

You're welcome. I didn't make the tutorial, I just found it. I figured it's easier to see a video demonstration than try to explain it only in text.
