User cache deleted every time I close a project

Hi there,

it's driving me crazy. Every time I close my current project, the User Cache, which took quite some time to render is gone, when I close the project. That can't be right, no?

Is there a setting I am missing? Or has anyone experienced the same? It used to work just fine in the past as far as I remember.

I am on macOS 18.1.4 Studio Version.

I tried to disable Auto cache for transitions, Smart Cache, individual cache, different cache locations, cache file formats... it always starts rendering the cache when I open up the project.

I really wish Blackmagic could get the Cache problem solved once and for all and make it easy and reliable to use. That's a big issue, as it seems. My project is only 10 minutes, I can't image how annoying it must be to have a 1h project caching over and over again.

Mark, while most of the time the cache works (kind of fine) I saw one project here where upon closing and re-opening that particular one was constantly losing cache, we could no find out why…..

I am using a local library. At first, I suspected Neat Video to be the cause, because for my Mavic Pro 2 footage I copied the profile from node to node. So I opened up each grade, each first node where my Neat video is, placed, opened up Neat video and hit "Apply"... That helped the drone clips to keep the cache, most of them anyway. At first I thought I had found the solution, but then I realized that also on clips with speed change and compound clips the cache gets lost lost every time I close the project.

My Cache drive is an internal SSD drive, my files are on external 8TB drives connected through USB Gen 2.

move one clip in the SSD and cache that, see it that stay cached. (eliminate the extranal USB drive just for this test)

I will try that later. But I don't think it's that. There is one odd thing. When I open up the Neat video on the first node, and click apply, this clip stays cached. At first I thought Neat video seems to be the problem, but in fact all of the clips with Neat video on the first node which I opened up, and closed, stay cached, all of the other clips and compounds get lost.

Yes, it seems that way. Weird, no?

Do you have “burn in” on? I saw an instance where the “burn in” was forcing re-render of cache even if cache was present…

No, but now I just copied the timeline and created a new project. For now everything stays cached. Let’s hope that it stays that way. Maybe the other version had one too many crashes. I wish there was an option to rebuild or clean database structures after a crash.

Well, I am back to loosing cache randomly. That is really annoying and shouldn’t happen. Such a waste of energy.

do you have adjustment clips or groups with cache?

Yes I do, and I think it’s either that or multiple timelines that causes this behavior. But it’s hard to tell, because it’s very erratic and unpredictable.

Do you have dynamic project switching and multiple timelines enabled?

I had the same problem, what I did is creating a new folder inside of the existing one where the the cache and stills are stored, replaced destination to it and now it’s ok. What I also realized is that cache directories are causing serious problems and crashes.

Did you ever resolve or figure out what was causing the issue? I'm having the same problem.
