Trouble deciding between ipad pro m1 1tb or m2 512gb

PostWed Mar 08, 2023 2:40 pm

As the title says, I am having trouble picking between ipad pro m1 1tb or m2 512gb, as i plan to get into video editing with davinci resolve on them. (I generally don't do digital creative work like on PC as I simply can't get used to it)

According to a comparison video I watch, m1 1tb (16gb) is better performance overall, but I can't estimate from the video how much better. Due to current offers, the price difference between them in my area is only 100usd, but the m2 512gb comes with a whole lot of other unidays bonus.

So is the m1(16gb ram) ipad pro significantly better than m2 512gb for video editing on DR, to the point where it's better for me to give up other uniday bonus?

Sorry for being late, but I got our iPad only a few days ago.
I’d say M1 or M2 is not as important as getting 16 GB RAM. That’s essential to run DR.
Yes, the M2 is faster, but IMHO neither of the iPads is up to being your only machine for DR right now.

What exactly do you want to do with? Which sources, codecs and resolution?
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I don’t think that 16gb is enough, let alone 8 gb. Given that you can’t add memory to the M Macs after purchase look carefully about the kind of video your you intend to do with the amount of memory you are considering.
Mac Studio ultra
Monterey 12.4
128 GB ram
2 TB SSD
48 TB HD disc storage, multiple RAIDS

He’s considering an iPad, David. They don’t come with more than 16 GB.

16GB may be great for future proofing and more intense work, but 8GB is fine if you're after simple video editing.

Don't fall for the hype unless you have cash to burn.

If you are fine with HD 8 GB may suffice.
I just rendered an hour of HD and it used only about a third of my 16 GB. But UHD? No way!
Mine is reasonably stable with its 16 for some editing and mild grading of UHD. But if I try something a bit more demanding, like generating some fog with the help of Depth Map, memory use is climbing to 98% plus something and then crashes to the home screen.
