Opening Projects not working

Dear Support team,

I can't open some of my projects.
As soon as I open them from the Library, DaVinci quits without any error message.
This only happens with two projects I worked on since two days ago.
Newly created projects seem to work. Older projects seem to work, but I'm afraid of running in the same issue when saving them.

I already tried the following:
- Opening project backups --> same error
- Export project (without opening) from library, save on another partition, then import again into library --> same error
- Create new project, open it, import one of the defect projects --> same error, DaVinci quits without error message.
- Install latest update of DaVinci --> did not fix error

I did not change anything in my workflow. No new vst/effect/plugin/whatever in use.

System Secs:
Mac Mini, M1 2020
Chip Apple M1
Memory 16 GB
macOS: Ventura 13.1 (22C65)

I save all my projects and backups on external SSD (There's more than enough storage left).
Frame rate of recorded material and system settings is the same.

If you are definitely using Resolve 18.1.4, then send a link to one of your project export .drp's that's not working so we can take a look at it.

You need to put the .drp on a file sharing site, like Dropbox or Google Drive, and then send a link to the file. A PM is fine. Make sure the link to the file does not require access credentials.

Today I reinstalled DaVinci but it did not solve the issue.

I just tried to go on with work, opened a new project and imported a bin.
DaVinci crashed directly after without giving me an error message.

Thanks for the log. That turned out to be more helpful than the drp.

Resolve is crashing due to an issue with the Cineform decoder library. Do you have any Cineform type files in the Media Pool?

If you start a new project, does that crash?

Since I'm new to editing, I was not aware of and did not check the list of supported Formats and Codecs.
I did two alpha Fusion compositions and exported them as Cineform.
Exported them to Quick Time Apple ProRes 4444 now and deleted the old ones.
All projects do open again now!

That's interesting.

The thing is, Cineform files shouldn't cause Resolve to crash. I was able to look at my sample Cineform files on an M1 MBP using Resolve 18.1.4 with no issue.

Perhaps something about Fusion rendered Cineform files is upsetting the Cineform M1 decoder.

Hi.. I am having and issue that is similar.

Resolve 18.1.4 AMD 7950X3D Windows 11

Everything was working fine.
1) My CPU was replaced; (same version)
VST's etc. was de-activated then re-activated after the replacement.

Now:
- I can create a new project
- Some of my old projects opens but the last main project that was working fine now hangs on start-up.
There are some other projects which are variants of this project; they also don't load; hangs.

I exported and tried re-loading; did not work. Old back-up of the hanging projects does not load.

The hang happens at the stage where the Audio VST's are being loaded.

Any ideas??

Hi Lashley,

Please don't quote a piece of a resolve log file in the body. Please follow Dwaine's instructions to get the log ZIP file and the NFO file and post a shared file URL to both so he can take a look.

Project loads fine on my GTX 1080 Windows 10 system.

But you have lots of third party stuff in the project, which I don't have.

The crash logs show issues with the Mainconcept engine, so that might be causing startup issues.

The crash logs also show tons of this error:

WASAPI: switching to AUTO because Headphones (2- Realtek USB Audio)cannot be started in exclusive

Maybe there is something odd with your Windows sound settings related to that audio device? Or maybe some other app is running that is accessing that?

Dwaine... thanks for looking into this for me.

Is it possible to remove the audio VST reference in the file and send me a DRP copy?
I think the Excalibur and Silk audio plugins may be the problem. It was popping up with an activation request before the CPU change; its not doing that anymore; but it still does it on the other projects. The other projects shows the errors in the log but still loads. It feels like the delay wait time may be
above the allowable process wait time because of the amount of VST's that have to be checked; any they are all calling out to verify activation status.

Hi Lashley,

You can open a new project, go to preferences and disable audio plugins you don't want loaded. When you reopen the project, Resolve will ignore the plugin and bypass the effect.

Dwaine... I re-installed resolve 18 but that did not fix my issue.
I went ahead and upgraded to 18.5beta; the project is still not loading but the other projects
are loading. Is it possible to look at the logs to see this new error that is being thrown out.
Its the same project type as in the earlier drp file. If it loads on you system is it possible to send me an
XML export of the project. Creating an empty project and doing a project import is not working; also hangs.

few project of the type that is not loading.

Dwain, thanks for looking into this issue. I am now at a standstill. I seem to getting dead locks between
the Fairlight and the audio vst's. Can you have a look at the log file as its throwing up some new errors.

I am using the latest Bios/Graphic Drivers/ Windows update - as of today.

Go into Resolve Preferences - System - Audio Plugins and select Disable All. Save the prefs and restart Resolve. Does that make the issue go away? If so, reenable them, one at a time, saving the prefs and restarting Resolve with each additional plugin enabled, and determine which plugin(s) is causing the issue.

Dwain... thanks for this update. The project is now loading.
I had previously tried your suggestion; what worked... I removed the path to the VST's as well, then it came up. It is also having problems with the path to some color VST's and is creating lots of popup messages for these. Those would have also caused some locks.

Solved: An audio VST was popping up at a later stage in the larger projects; on smaller projects it came up at the stage where Fairlight was loading and could be overridden. There was a license issue that was resolved so that issue should have disappeared. In trouble shooting the issue, I re-installed Resolve and in
that process removed some video VST (DCTL). During the startup the system would hang with popups on every missing DCTL's. If you did not respond to the first popup instantly, the system would then lock up as the active popup would be overlayed by others so it could not be acted on. This process was happening behind the audio VST popup wait that was not visible on screen; the the whole system would hang with a dead lock once it went through Fairlight loading. Soloution: Remove the path to the VST from the parameter save and reboot. (on a loadable project) (unloadable - you could (temp) rename the VST directory name or (temp) move from away from the search path)
