What to expect with an HW update?

PostSun Mar 19, 2023 8:12 pm

Hi,
My current config is : https://valid.x86.fr/qdg2hi
The MB can take up to the 5950X
My case is not optimized for performance, but I want to keep it : https://www.fractal-design.com/app/uplo ... 605-Ps.pdf > max GPU length 180 mm ?
Last video edited : footage from Sony A7 III, duration 5', took 2h30 to export  (beautify and some color grading) :

Even with proxies, adjustment layer unmute, it was a bit choppy, especially with titles, transitions...
Real time rendering is sometimes disappointing.
Targets :
from Ryzen 7 2700X to Ryzen 7 5800X
from GeForce 1660 6 GB to 3060 12 GB
Maybe from 16 GB of RAM to 32
Will I get a significant increase in performance according to your experience?
Thanks

I would think that the GPU upgrade would improve things.
I have an older GTX 1060 6GB GPU and get the same choppy titles and transitions when using a UHD timeline but expect that with that GPU.
Rendering though is not too bad. My last video was shot in 25fps 1080p C-Log to Pro Res 422. No proxies needed. Project was graded and upscaled to a UHD timeline using Super Scale. Rendered to UHD h265 the 17.5 minute video took 39 minutes from start to stop.
Your 2.5 hours seems excessive.

Thanks!
You're absolutely right, don't know why it took 2,5 hours.
Usually it's way faster. Maybe the beautify filter with tracking...
Just wondering what kind of the speed increase can I expect?
Is it worth the upgrade? Roughly 600 to 700€...

I don't know about your motherboard. Be careful as some of them had Bios limitations such that they could not support both 2000 Series and 5000 series Ryzens with the same version. Careful upgrading and swapping was needed to not result in bricking the computer.

If you are using Studio, the most bang for the buck is a GPU upgrade. I checked and my GPU is generally at almost 100% and the CPU (Ryzen 3600) is not.

I would suggest swapping the GPU first and seeing if you get enough improvement before swapping the CPU. Adding more RAM is also low risk, although you may find new RAM does not play well with old if you mix sticks.

Thanks Mark

MSI Bazooka v2 officially supports the Ryzen 7 5800X, it should not be an issue.

Your advice makes sense, first change the GPU, then the RAM (same ref as my old one) and maybe later the CPU
