Weird color artifacts

PostSun Mar 19, 2023 8:12 pm

Hi ,

After export i found a couple of frames with weird color artifacts, always on the same clip right after the cut. I tried different settings (mov, mp4, ...) without success. But it only appears in 1080p exports, not in 4K exports (i have to deliver in 1080 too). Its not visible on the timeline either. Its a Red Raw R3D file, without any effects, only grading. Other Red files are exported without any issues. Its the first time i have this problem.
What cause this issue? Any solutions i really appreciate? Thank you much!

I am on Mac M1 system, DVR 18.1. Studio

Which codec do you use for export? Can you post a frame with those artefacts?

what kind of artefacts? it could come from the downsampling to HD, so a different resizing filter might work.

Try doing this.
Get a Prores 444XQ master from your timeline.
Use the Prores XQ file to render out in 1080p.
FILMWALLAH.

Thanks a lot for your help guys!

at the bottom are some links.
If you have an eye on the head of the moray eel and the landscape in the beginning of the scene, the blurriness is not long but it is obvious, its about four five klicks forward in the player
The artifacts only occur when the previous clip with the Octopus is rendered too.
Very strange! I don't have a transition on.

If ProRes works, the additional load of encoding to a GOP codec is probably pushing your hardware over the edge. Export ProRes and encode to H.264 or 265 externally with ffmpeg or HandBrake.

Its a 10Core CPU, 32Core GPU, 32Ram Macbook, should be enough

Could be a hiccup in the encoder. Even Apple isn't perfect ;-)
But another reason can be Red's SDK, for which recently Dwaine confirmed that the latest version is not that great for speed. BTW, which camera? Red recently switched compression from wavelet to DCT.
Anyway, I've never noticed something like this, since I normally export ProRes and further encode with HandBrake.
But then, it could be a bad combination of Red's compression and final compression to H.264. One thing to try that comes to my mind, try to play with these settings in DR:

P.S. As a diver, I can truly appreciate the footage.

It seemed that the clip before caused the artifacts. So I removed this clip and put it back on the timeline again. Everythings rendered how it should be now
