Can't import video files

PostMon Mar 20, 2023 8:28 am

Gidday
I have an I7, 32GB RAM, and an 8Gb AMD RX 580 card and I can't seem to import any video (AVI and MPG formats) although I have been able to import JPG image files.
Is there something in the preferences to set or is it something to do with the graphics card?
I am using DaVinci Resolve version 18.1.4.9

I am a bit of a newbie with this so please go easy :D

cheers

Try to find out the codec used in those clips. AVI is just a container and MPEG-2 is pretty old (but read here). MediaInfo (free) will be helpful.
You can also post short samples to a cloud service and somebody may check them.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Download the clips in the link below. Test them out, report back.

Thanks for the reply...I installed MediaInfo and created a report...it says that the CODEC ID is H264, anything else that would indicate it as being old?

That something may be wrong with your clips. What is their source? Can you post short samples to a cloud service?
You can also try to open your clips in Shutter Encoder and convert them to DNxHR or ProRes.

I don’t see anything that should cause difficulties. Post a sample to a cloud service, please.

Therein lies the problem...I can't open them in DaVinci to edit them....are you able to suggest another editing program so I can edit it to a size and I can then upload it somewhere?

I can already spot the problem: your recordings have a variable frame rate.
Convert to a constant frame rate with a tool like Shutter Encoder (free) and try again.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.
