DNxHR in Proxy generator

PostWed Mar 22, 2023 5:46 am

Hi,
Is there a way to have DNxHR or DNxHD codecs available in proxy generator?

Thanks,
Lluís

No, which is hard to understand. On the Mac you have ProRes as an option.
But you can generate your proxies in any format from DR directly with the Individual clips option.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Well, encoding with the Proxy Generator in the background would also be taxing the machine while you work in DR. Try Shutter Encoder (donationware), it supports all codecs and resolutions and recently got a very good watchfolder feature.

Agreed, Black Magic has severely hamstrung the Proxy tool on Windows.

I see it causing a lot of confusion for beginners as 'I made proxies, why does my performance still suck'. Well you used the wrong proxy tool, you need to use the other one that actually produces a sensible codec.

H265 Proxies of course do have a place for someone like a remote editor, you could drop box them all the chopped down footage, then bring the timeline back to export with the natives.

Unfortunately not. Actually, no Red RAW etc. either. For those you need DR.
Shutter Encoder is based on ffmpeg. IIRC, the Cloud Pod can generate proxies independently.
Could that be a solution for your workflow?

BRAW is pretty smooth in Resolve. Why proxies?

That's true. Actually, BRAW is running smoothly even on the MacBook Air M1 or an iPad (non Pro).
I can hardly imagine any PC that is up to the specification of DR and not running BRAW.

But then, you may want to convert other, more difficult RAW formats.

Small files to edit remotely.

This was clearly the angle BM was going here, offering only H.264/5 as proxy codecs, both which are going to be same speed or slower than what your camera shot in.

Which is not always a great codec. Some team members may just have laptops or notebooks without decoding in hardware. There must be a reason they offer ProRes on Macs.

Not sure DNx will be all that much smaller than BRAW.

H.264 will, but it's those files that often need the larger DNx proxies for better performance.
