1 user, multi computer workflows?

PostThu Mar 23, 2023 8:10 pm

I'm using davinci to edit a youtube show and I have a new job with a commute. A lot of the editing consists of putting the two host videos on the timeline then watching through it and making cuts and edits as needed for mistakes or dogs barking etc. Light duty work in terms of resolve but it takes a while.

I normally do editing on my desktop computer but I have a reasonable gaming laptop that meets the specs for working with resolve (I don't expect to do complex fusion work on it) and it would be good to be able to do that basic editing on my commute on the laptop before transfering back to the desktop for effects, clips and final render.

I have normally used dropbox for tasks like this in the past, and have found several posts warning against doing this, and I noticed resolve has a network and cloud mode, but these all seem geared towards multiple users working on this simultaneously and I don't need that level of complexity.

I have a look at just exporting the project and then reimporting it but given my project has 150GB of video file in it and the total of all the exports I could do came to about 250kb, it is safe to assume the videos aren't there.

So is there a straight forward way to transfer or sync a project between two machines? If setting up the network option or something is the way to go, I have server machines it could be setup on and happy to do what is necessary but it isn't clear the best way to handle this workflow.

Thanks for any advice.

If you can carry your files on some external storage, like a SSD, you can set up the BM Cloud for yourself only and keep the current state of the project there. It'll be updated by either machine and you are good to go.
We tested it with an iPad Pro and a desktop. It'll only cost you 5 bucks per month and is more convenient than exporting and importing .drp files (which would be free).

BTW, for anybody who needs more information on BM's Cloud, my colleague Bernd Klimm wrote a very detailed report on it. It's in volume 2/2023 of the German magazine Digital Production. You can buy it as PDF and DeepL should give you a pretty good translation.

Ahh that sounds like a simple straight forward way to go. I assume I dont need to be connected while i'm editing?

Well, normally it’s meant to be online constantly and being able to work collaborative. If there’s nobody on the other end, it should work if you only connect at the beginning and the end of the session. OTOH, that limits the advantages of this approach when saving.
I’d rather use export and import of .drop files and a proper naming scheme then.

So manually exporting in and out with dropbox and stick all the media files in dropbox sounds like a safe way to go as well, and I can save $5 a month. Thanks for the reply.

I just use USB C , 2T SSD for source files and when finished editing on one PC export the drp to the SSD to use on the other PC. Of course I have a backup of files on another hard drive too.

You may need to pay more for a reasonably sized Dropbox. But the transport of media is independent of the BM Cloud anyway.
