Laggy Resolve 18

PostThu Mar 23, 2023 10:25 pm

What's up everyone?

Trying to run Davinci Resolve 18(.1.4)

My issue:
- Slow UI overall (selecting a clip in the timeline takes a sec, changing tabs takes a sec)
- Getting realtime playback (23.98fps, green light), but preview is choppy. Though full screen playback is smooth.

My setup:
Dell Precision T5810
Xeon E5 2680 v4 (NO official Windows 11 support, I am running Windows 10)
RTX 3060 12GB
64GB RAM
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Anybody have any advice?
Is it a CPU issue?
Windows version issue?

In the Viewer menus, check the option to Show All Video Frames.

Report back.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

You haven't indicated, footage type, codec, resolution and timeline resolution.

A laggy interface can mean video driver problems, but impossible to say with the little information you've provided.

Jonathon and Markus, help us to help you by giving details of your system. Also, as John Paines says above, details of your footage including type and source, codec, resolution, and the timeline resolution. The more information given the more likely that someone can help. :)

I am having similar issues with the framerate being green (25), but the playback also being choppy. But I don't have smooth playback in fullscreen either, both are laggy. It randomly started happening 2 weeks ago. Basically everything is slower now.

I always use DNx proxies for everything, but the source media is still linked which is usually h.265/h.264. Some all intra, some long gop.

Timeline resolution is 1080p / 720p, depending on projects. Proxies are half size DNxSQ
Even when I turn off the grade it only helps a little bit. Usually I could playback without any problem and edit live without lag. Now it's impossible to have any efficiency.

System specs:

- Resolve 18.1.4
- Windows 10
- CPU: Ryzen 9 3950x
- GPU: RTX Quadro 4000
- Ram: 2x Kingston DDR4 16GB 3200MHz DDR4 2Rx8
- External NVMe drive with the footage on it, proxies on an internal Kingston KC2500 500GB M.2 PCI SSD, resolve is also installed here.

I've been editing long form documentaries for a while now in resolve without issues, so with no change in workflow or specs, it just started being slow one day. I suspected it was a RAM issue, but I manage to use all memory if I open up 50 chrome tabs. It doesn't seem to be bottlenecking at any point when I look at my task manager.

Well, to state the obvious, if you can't even play proxies with no color correction without lag, something is definitely wrong. There are other recent threads also noting suddenly loss of performance, for no apparent reason.

Since nothing is changing in your Resolve configuration, it sounds like it's related to Windows (and updates?), but who knows..... Unclear whether system logs will diagnose the problem (see instructions in the stickie above), but it might be worth posting them for the staff to review.

Hi all,

I let the problem sink in. Didn't touch Resolve.

Today I had to import a project that I have to finish up.

Resolve kept freezing when trying to import.

Googled some, poked around in Windows.

Finally landed on Windows compatibility mode.

Somehow Resolve was set to run in Windows 8 compatibility mode.
Disabled that. Resolve 18.1.4 now runs as expected.

Are you saying it was set to windows 8 compatability mode, and turning it off fixed it? Because unfortunately my version of resolve is not set to windows 8 compatability mode... I guess I'm still lost here.

Not sure if it helps, but the fairlight page is rendering frames accurately. It seems that the lag is mostly occurring in the edit & color pages.

In the edit page the lag feels similar to a 3:2 pulldown, while maintaining a linear speed, and dropping frames.

In the color page, the video slows down, and doesn't drop any frames.

Why the inconsistencies? Why can the video play fine in the fairlight tab?

Experiencing the same thing here.

Updated to 18.5b yesterday – video playback is choppy, but the playback indicator is green and signals real-time playback.

The Fairlight page seems to play video smoothly with no issue.

Rolled back to 18.1.2 and the issue no longer exists.

If anyone has any more insight or ideas, I'm eager to hear them!

It looks like there is another thread touching upon the same issue – thought I would share it here as well:

Hey everyone,

I've been having this problem the last few days too, on a WINDOWS machine. Complete drop in performance with no explanation, originally in V.17 so I upgraded to 18.5 and still had the same issue.

Main symptoms were that in the cut and edit page the playback was lagging despite the FPS ball being green and reading 25fps.

I tried all manner of things; lowering timeline resolution, creating optimised media, creating various proxies but it just did nothing, toggling on/off audio, linking/unlinking clips, disabling grades.

It seems I've finally figured out a solution!

As I mentioned, I'm currently Windows-based.

Step. 1 Right-Click DaVinci Resolve icon on the taskbar.

Step. 2 In the pop-up window that appears Right-Click on the new DaVinci Resolve icon that is displayed

Step. 3 Click "Properties"

Step. 4 Click the header "Compatibility"

Step. 5 In the "Compatibility mode" section uncheck the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

I restarted DaVinci and performance levels returned to normal.

Credit to this Video for suggesting the method - https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=bFVywDATYVk&t=249s

Let me know if this works for others.

Best
