Non color managed, colormanaged, ACES - Different results

PostFri Mar 24, 2023 9:11 am

Hey all,

first time poster here.

I have Slog3/S-Gamut3.Cine footage from my Sony A7 IV.

So far i have always used a non color managed workflow for my grading but i would like to switch to a color managed one.
Now the first step i wanted to make sure is, that i get the same results to start with each workflow doing just a regular conversion to REC709.

As you can see in the attachments, this is not the case.

Do you have any idea, why this could be? Shouldn't they be the same?
Maybe I am missing something here?

Thanks for your help.

RCM and ACES just aren't the same. Choose the one you prefer.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

No. Colormanaged systems include picture rendering which is subjective and based on the CM authors’ choices. And neither of them match noncolormanaged result either. This is expected and normal.
I do stuff.

Cullen Kelly went over over this in the Official BM Color Management Zoom course he taught a while ago. I haven't watched the new 30 min video he did, but hopefully it is in there too

I'd like to add that with the proper settings, non-managed (manual with CSTs) should look the exact same as managed provided you use the same settings.

Your output space should be Rec.709/Gamma 2.4 in RCM and the CST setup. Not use timeline.

For the non managed to match your managed setting:
Your timeline space in should be your grading space, so DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate.
Your footage should be converted from SLog3/SGamut3.cine to DWG/Intermediate via CST, Output Max Nits should be set to 4000.
Then grading can happen.
Followed by the CST DWG/Intermediate to Rec.709/Gamma 2.4

if by that you mean something like "I like the LUT x look" then the simple answer is:

"yes you can, but it is really difficult to set it up and most likely if you know how to set it up you dont need RMC/ACES in the first place...."
