Just started dropping frames. Why?

PostSat Mar 25, 2023 11:08 pm

DR studio user. Same PC for about two years. Running 18.1.4 after updating in hopes to solve the issue. I don't remember what version I upgraded from but it was 18-something. I was running 18 successfully with no issues since it launched.

With no real reason, I started dropping frames constantly on playback with no effects enabled. The only time I've dropped frames previously is when taking a clip to 3000% or so for a timelapse. Even then I can use the render cache to play it smoothly. The dropped frames happen from 4k .mp4 files right off the camera with no grade, lut, or effects.

I updated to the latest Nvidia studio driver today with no change in playback.

Not sure if this is a Resolve issue or maybe a hard drive issue. Can someone help me figure out why I can no longer play basic 4k .mp4 files without dropping frames?

If you haven't already, check your GPU preferences to make sure you're running CUDA and that the setting hasn't altered on its own or after an upgrade.

Auto was set. I deselected auto and forced it to CUDA with my card selected. No change. Thanks for your time.

I copied some media files from the edit drive to my OS drive (C), created a fresh project in resolve, added the files off the C drive and the frames are still dropping. That tells me the edit drive is not to blame. I don't think the OS drive has issues because I'm not seeing any performance issues in windows or anything else installed on the computer.

Seems like it's the entire program of Resolve that is choppy, not just playback. Moving around on the timeline, navigating edit/color tabs, and all menus are laggy just in Resolve.

Solved. I updated Windows 10 and it fixed the Resolve lagging issue. I have no idea why Resolve was the only program lagging but it's fixed. Strange.

Update. No it's not solved. I got about 10 minutes of lag free work after updating windows, made this post, and the lag is back. So frustrating.

I would uninstall your current Resolve version and re-install it. The other thing which *might* be worth trying is export a project, then create a new library, import that project and see if it makes any difference.

I've tried:
    - 3 different 18.x versions
    - New database
    - Added the same files to an existing project file that I know edited smoothly
    - Created a new project for these files and matched clip settings for timeline
    - Added the same files from multiple hard drives
    - Updated windows
    - Updated nvidia drivers
    - Rebooted over and over and over
    - Nothing hanging in task manager and never more than 50% GPU usage on single clip playback with nothing done to the clip
I'm lost

At this point, it might be worth trying a clean Windows install. Or if you have time, generate logs per the instructions in the stickie above and see if the staff can help.

Still no luck. It's got to be a resolve issue because all other windows applications are working just fine. Resolve, no matter what 18.x version I install, regardless of database, new and old projects, frames are dropping on normal 4k mp4 files from a Sony A6500 and menu navigation in DR is laggy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I haven't done is a fresh install of Windows.

You can't assume that. There are reports of otherwise unexplainable Resolve performance issues fixed with a clean install. It's only speculation, but if you've exhausted everything else....

One thing you might try, if only as a stopgap, is creating proxies and/or optimized media. If you still have playback issues even with intermediate codecs, then.....

If you've got the time, maybe try v17, even if you have no v17 project backups -- just to find out whether what you're seeing is unique to 18. At least that would narrow it.

Bingo! 17.4.6 allows for smooth playback and no lag in DR. Unfortunately, I don't have a current project template file with 17 so I'll have to rebuild that. It's just odd that 18 was working great for me with no problems for a few months and then just started lagging.

With 17.4.6 I can scrub the timeline fast and my GPU% stays below 30% the entire time.

I uninstalled 17 and installed 18.1.4 Build 9 and the lag is back. Scrubbing the timeline with the same clips has my GPU% peaking at 69%

I found the problem with 18. I have no idea why, but when installing, it defaults to "Run in compatibility mode for:" and Windows 7 was selected. I'm running Windows 10 so I unchecked the box and restarted resolve. All is well now. No more dropped frames and no more lag when navigating the application. Hope this helps someone else out there.

I'm glad you got your issue resolved. Unfortunately your solution is not working for me. I keep getting dropped frames even though my compatibility mode is correct.
