Safe Area View - "On"

PostTue Mar 28, 2023 7:42 am

When you navigate between timelines in tabbed timeline view, the Safe Area View, that is set to "ON" does not persist between timelines. The "On" Check Box stays persistent but the Safe Area UI disappears once you start to navigate to the other timelines.

Steps:
1. Open Several Timelines in tabbed view
2. Navigate to View > Safe Area
3. Select "On"
4. Navigate to a new timeline
** the Safe Areas will now disappear from the Viewer
5. Check the state of Safe Area in step 2
** Note that it is still checked as "ON"

I can't duplicate this in Studio 18.1.4 on Windows 10.

The setting is per timeline, and persistent as set.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

This should not be a "Timelineline Setting" and should be moved to a "Per Viewer" feature and a viewer switch/button added.

Nothing more frustrating than having to cycle through hundreds of timelines to reposition text and having to turn this on for every single timeline. Yes, it stays persistent on that one timeline, but then when i don't want the safe area on any more, i have to toggle this off again for yes, hundreds of timelines.

This does not seem as intended and still report it as a bug over a new feature request.

I'm very pissed off that Safe Action turns off when you go from the Color page to the Edit page. Makes me crazy. Just leave the damn thing on.

It's also broken on the Advanced Panels: you can turn Safe Action ON, but frequently you can't turn it off from the panels. You can turn it off from the menu controls, but it's an annoyance. This has been an off-and-on bug going back at least to Resolve 15 or 16.

I can't duplicate that either. It stays as I set it, whether switching timelines or pages.

Works as expected for me too.

I should've been clearer: the Safe Action reticle disappears from the monitor output of Resolve when you switch from the Color page to the Edit page. You can see the Safe Action on the Viewer on the Edit page, but not on the main Resolve output going to the hero display.

And my comment about the Mode -> Safe Action "off" exit button going away on the Advanced Panel is a problem that still exists.

Do you mean the screen connected by an I/O device? It don't get a Safe Area there anyway.

Yes it does.

I use it quite a bit to check framing, particularly if we have tight framing or a title issue. If I turn on the Safe Action display, I just want it up all the time, until I turn it off -- Edit page, Color page, whatever page. I tend to bristle when Resolve tries to ignore how I want to work.

This is ideal and I would think the logical approach would be adding it to the viewer as a button and not persisting it as timeline tool.
