Media Manager won't trim clips

PostTue Mar 28, 2023 4:33 pm

I'm trying to media manage a project of 4K ProRes 422 clips. I select Used Media and Trim and specify 0 frame handles, but when I click Start, it's only exporting full clips. Any reason this might be?

It works as expected for me. Can you post screenshots of your settings?

You know, I've used Media Manager a hundred times but it never even occurred to me to trim using 0 frame handles. What if you capitulated and asked for 12-frames or even 24-frame handles? On my current project, I think we're going to go wild and use 96-frame handles, because we've already slipped and slided a bit on some shots.

I tried entering 12 into the box and the estimate went up from 2.6TB to 2.8 or something like that. (Should actually be 500GB or so based on the runtime). But I didn’t actually click the button to start it. I could try.

You should try it - it could be a bug in Resolve where it doesn't actually trim unless you define a non-zero handle. Of course, that doesn't explain why 2.8 GB rather than 500 MB. Can you re-test with a very simple timeline with a single ProRes clip?

Ok I reduced the timeline to a single clip and it worked with both 12 frames and 0 frames. Restored the original timeline and tried again (both 0 and 12 frames) and its failing to trim as before.

Wow - that doesn't sound good. Sorry I don't have any ideas, Zak. In your original timeline, are each of your clips associated with a separate ProRes file or are they many subclips pointing to different portions of the same file? This may seem like an odd question - just spit-balling, lol.

No worries, appreciate you trying. It's a feature, so for the most part, each ProRes file is a take thats being referenced multiple times.

This machine is on Monterey currently, could there be any possible benefit to upgrading to Ventura?

Media Manager won't trim clips

PostThu Apr 06, 2023 6:09 pm

Nope. Ventura makes no difference.
I came across the issue helping a collogue. He is on Monterey & Resolve 18.1.4; I am on Ventura and R.18.1.4 build 9
Trying to replicate his issues I discovered the following.

media manager >>copy a clip 66frame original.
Copy used with handles -timeline 4frames, 25frame handles, result: 66 frames.

Also tried media manager >>Transcode used media with handles (as shown in manual, and @ Zac Rays screenshot) result: 44 frames. CORRECT!

So media manager copy tab copies the entire clip, and ignores “used media with handles” option when set.

*****but need to generate trimmed media with correct source time code maintained, so transcode not an option.
*****

Also tried render in place 4frame timeline with timeline in and out set, with 10frame handles, (original clip 66frames)
Incorrect result: saved as a clip to finder 4 frames, no handles.

Also tried default handles, in media manager >>copy
No handles just “used media” (hoping someone coded the controls flipped, LoL.)
And a bunch of other ways of exporting a consolidated project.

So the handles mechanism seems broken. Everywhere except the media manager >>timelines tab.
