Warning: AMD Adrenalin 23.4.2 driver

PostWed Apr 26, 2023 8:37 pm

Installed AMD Adrenalin latest update (24.4.2) and Resolve essentially became unusable, freezing after a few seconds of playing video. Seems there is some type of memory management issues, GPU memory seems to fill up like crazy. Would suggest that you avoid 23.4.2. If you have installed it and have issues, just uninstall and grab the previous version here: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/relea ... win-23-4-1.

Checking out the AMD community boards, it seems that this is not an issue with 18.5 beta, but have not tested as will not taked 18.5 into use before its released.

Hi.

I was using driver version 23.4.2 and it was working fine for me. Today I have updated to version 23.4.3 and the program has started to crash due to exponential memory usage. I have reverted to drivers 2.4.2 and it kept happening.

Use Display Driver Uninstaller to remove the old driver.

See if it happens again.

I uninstalled the Adrenalin driver, now I get a message saying "The code execution cannot proceed because OpenCL.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem."
"Reinstalling" opencll, or DaVinci Resolve?

You need to download the driver you want to use, then use DDU in safe mode with the internet offline to remove the old driver and install the downloaded one after the restart (with the internet still off to prevent Windows update installing its crap).

Sounds like you just removed the driver but you didn't install a new one in its place.

Thank you for posting this! I have been troubleshooting for nearly a week and then I came across this post.

23.4.1 Is the stable driver to roll back to. Exactly what has happened to me but as I did a bios update as well as driver updates I got lost in the sauce trying to figure it out.

THANK YOU!

One thing that I've tried steering users in other topics towards what would help this problem not occur anymore.

If its not too much, it would help if you would fill out an anonymous bug report in the Adrenalin software interface, describing the issue. It would help subsequent drivers get this fixed. Its under Performance -> Advanced Settings (bottom right) -> Launch bug reporting tool.

Can confirm the issue persists in driver version 23.4.3

Rolled back to 23.4.1 and the issue disappeared.

23.5.1 is out with the following fix:

"Application crash or driver timeout may be observed during video playback using DaVinci Resolve™ Studio."

So it seems to be fixed.

They did it before countless times. Especially when Adobe stuff needed fixing. Also reporting the bugs via the interface is the fastest way to get them fixed.

I have the exact same issue (Ryzen 7 5700G and RX 6700 XT). I installed the latest Adrenalin drivers from AMD and Resolve just stopped working. I even updated to the 18.5 beta and it still won't work. When I try to open Resolve, it gives me the error:
"Unsupported GPU Processing Mode
Please review the GPU drivers and GPU
configuration under preferences."
I was wondering why this was the case but apparently I'm not the only one having this issue.

If you get that message something is not installed properly on your system. Its not a driver issue per se.

The issues with 23.4.2 were with memory leaks where it would fill up after a while and crash.

Yours look like failed driver installs.

Since you have a 5700G, that is an APU that has its own iGPU. You sure the right GPU is selected in Resolve preferences and you have installed the proper drivers for both? (5700G is a separate driver from 6700XT under downloads)

Or better yet, if you don't use the iGPU for another monitor or something, disable it from BIOS?

Hi Noah,

As suggested above, please try to install the latest GPU driver and see if that helps? Its better to do a 'Clean Install' in such cases. There is a checkbox shown on the initial installation screens for that.

If Resolve still errors out at launch, could you please send us the Resolve logs? More details on how to do that are here - viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190

I am still on 22.5.1 drivers from last year.
My reason is because BorisFX Continuum Complete BCC Title Studio and Lightning, Ignite Pro 5, NBFX Titler Pro 7 do not work with later versions of Adrenalin drivers.
Whenever I've updated AMD drivers, I use AMD's cleanup utility, which causes the computer to reboot into Safe Mode to remove the drivers.

I have tried 22.Q4, and the same results with those plugins. But Resolve Studio has always worked with whatever driver I've tried in my search of a newer AMD driver that works with my plugins.

I've sent bug reports to Boris and NBFX. Ignite Pro 5 is no longer supported by FXHome/Artlist.

Oh, I've tried these drivers in both Win10 Pro and Win11 Pro, which both are up to date.

Using AMD RX 6700XT.

Not trying to start a brand war but if you think that AMD drivers are bad but you want to switch to ARC.. you will want to make a reservation into a mental asylum.

That's a very new architecture with tons of bugs, you will not have a pleasant time with it, it will literarily drive you nuts

PS: 23.7.2 here, working fine with no issues.

Good advice. He should try to get help or switch to Nvidia. Intel Arc isn't ready yet.

I'm considering a 7900 XTX - I think some ppl here have this card but I haven't read any updates - either everything is okay or they gave up?

Any idea how it is is DR right now? I also am interested in using DR in Linux - will that make a difference? Maybe it's better to have an Nvidia card if using DR in Linux? Just curious.

Some sites that test DR - e.g. Puget Systems - the 7900 XTX does fine (in Windows) - although, it might not resemble 'real world' results or outcomes? I understand the driver version can make a difference.

Also, in Linux - there's a lot of variables - different kernel versions, package versions - Nobara - is a distro based on Fedora - and DR is supposedly already configured - I was thinking of trying it. Thanks for any insight/info. Cheers!

Oh, I don't want any gpu 'war' either - so, please no flame wars or anything. I'm sure nvidia and amd cards are okay for ppl - I am just curious if I should invest in the 7900 xtx or 4080 - and interested in ppl's experiences. :)

General consensus is that Nvidia has better support from both devs and driver team, with that said there are problems with Nvidia cards as well, but probably a lot less than with AMD.

Another downside with Radeon is the fact that Remote monitoring works only with an Nvidia GPU and no support or any news from BMD staff if there will ever be a Radeon support for such a thing, i would love to be able to use my iPad as a 2nd monitor but for now this is not an option for me.

Driver wise my 6800XT is working quite nice with Resolve 18.5 right now but i don't have a new RTX card to compare it to, last time i made a comparison was vs a 1080Ti which i owned prior to this one, both cards served me well ( PS the 6800XT pulled ahead quite a lot with NR nodes active, but it was expected from a newer faster card)

Also take into consideration OS support, no idea how is Nvidia vs Radeon on Linux.

That post is 100% trolling...I would ignore it.

That phrase "real world" is thrown quite a bit around here and other places but nobody even explains what that even means. If the card works in Resolve and its benchmarks (Puget one) then it works in Resolve...What more is there? It works with the benchmark files but when you put "real" files it stops working? :))

Concerning Resolve, 7900XTX works fine. Except some things like remote monitoring, it chews through material same as an nividia card. And no GPU memory full errors either.

16GB vs 24GB is also something to consider. Especially if you work with RAW. Makes a ton of difference.

I will probably switch to a Sapphire 7900XTX Nitro in about a month. If you want "real world" experience then I'll be happy to share it with you. Until then my 6800XT worked great in whatever I threw at it (which was mostly RAW I admit).

Real world experience means, experience catered to your workflow , camera footage used, codecs, effects, node tree.

Correct me if i'm wrong but from what i recall one of the PugetSystem tests requires rendering footage with 3 Spatial NR nodes applied and giving a score, notice score and not FPS/time required to finish.

Who does 3 NR nodes on a footage? and Scores can mean nothing in actual rendering time or flow of editing, if you ask me the snappiness of the software while editing is the most important metric and i don't think you can actually bench this thing, you will have to edit and "feel" the difference but here an youtuber might have a subjective or an objective conclusion about it.

Andreline is for gaming boost, Pro version is for video editing softwares etc.

Actually Pro version is for Pro cards that require validation.

Besides being on a more stable, older branch of the driver code, there shouldn't be any other differences.

I'd take Adrenalin for Resolve, it contains more recent fixes. Nothing wrong with the Pro version though.

6800XT her and tried 23.9.3

Stay away from it. It makes Resolve freeze for several seconds very often and sometimes it triggers Windows to be unresponsive as well.

Went back to 23.9.1 and everything is fine again.

Im still having the issue of frozen play back and no thumbnail preview of clips in timeline or in color work space. Sometimes though a preview might appear and maybe I can play back a clip, but as soon as I change to another the playback freezes and wont show an updated thumbnail preview. It shows 0 fps.
I never had a problem. It suddendly appeared, I havent update Davinci nor a driver, maybe Windows did in the background?
I tried the proposed solutions: I did the Clean Up of Drivers and installed different driver versions (23.4.1, 23.7.1, tried even older ones), and still having this issue.

My system specs:
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor 3.80 GHz
64 GB Ram
AMD Radeon RX 6800 16GB
Resolve Studio 18.5.1 (also tried on 18.6.)

The freezes started with Resolve around the time when they first introduced HDR controls, sometimes when you change something there it takes a while to recover playback, for me it's the contrast button that triggers this.

BlackMagicDesign seems tot have issues optimizing for AMD hardware, all the focus goes to Nvidia GPUs.

I think it's something related to shaders and how the driver works with the software but i cannot tell since i'm no expert on how drivers work.

Re: Warning: AMD Adrenalin 23.4.2 driver

So far the best working driver for my 6800XT and Resolve is the 23.8.2

I have tried the 23.10.1 but it freezes too often upon changing settings inside nodes, it takes few seconds to recover, and it also has a weird issue which is very hard to explain.

I have a 144Hz monitor and the mouse while using the interface goes into 60Hz (i presume) mode which starts to feel very "choppy", goes back to normal as soon as i minimize Resolve. It gives you the impression that the mouse is lagging.

This thing doesn't happen with the older drivers.

First impression in terms of stability are good. Now would be a great time for BM to release 18.6.3 so that we could finally upgrade to 18.6 with confidence. And get the full(er) benefit of the better AI performance also on AMD iron!

Tested the latest AMD driver 23.12.1 on 6800XT, latest Windows 11 and Resolve 18.6.4

Resolve crashes very often and it closes with no warning. When it works it works fine, but it crashes, went back to 18.6.3, more stable but crashes as well.

I guess i'll be back to 23.8.2 yet again.

Thanks for the heads-up. FYI, 23.11.1 has also been very stable.

I often use Full screen mode, the cinema viewer. That's when all of the crashes occurred so far.

It doesn't do it all the time though, it's when you expect it the least.
