Was "Living in the Age of Airplanes" edited on Resolve?

PostMon May 22, 2023 7:59 pm

I have just been working through the video tutorials on DV Resolve and was using the provided media from the National Geographic documentary "Living in the Age of Airplanes" .

I was so impressed with the sample footage that I got a copy of the film and watched it a few minutes ago.

I am curious as to whether it was edited on Resolve?

They've been using this for a long time as a demo. I think it was entirely shot with BMD cameras, edited in Resolve, with final color and graphics done in Resolve.

Thanks.

I watched it with my wife and I think she groaned inwardly when she saw the title but was very impressed and glad she had watched it.

Sorry Marc, that is all incorrect.

They started filming in 2010 with the first ARRI Alexa and they shot 260 hours in total, ending in 2012.
A Canon EOS 5D was used for the timelapses.

No BMD camera was used ever because they did not even exist at that time.

Post-production started in 2014 - way before Resolve got its editing features.
I haven't found info on color grading.

Thanks for that tremendous amount of information.

I had assumed that as Resolve used the clips in their training videos they had been connected with the making of the film.

My pleasure.

I was intrigued by the training material like you and got interested in the movie, so I bought it on iTunes.
I too watched it with my wife, but she fell asleep as soon as the movie started ;-)

Thanks for the correction. I know BMD has been using this footage for demos for years and years, at least since 2015. Blackmagic introduced their first camera back in 2012 (a long time ago, but not going back to Alexa), so I can see where it couldn't have been used for this show. I'm surprised that Resolve wasn't used for any editing in the production.

I always try to poke my clients into including the Blackmagic logo in the end credits if I can, particularly if Adobe or Avid are in there (plus Technicolor, Kodak, and all the other studio-related companies).
