IMF playback in realtime

PostThu May 25, 2023 8:20 am

Hi there. I'm looking for info on realtime IMF playback.

I'm got my UHD SDR IMF on an NVME drive with a read speed of about 3000MB/s but can only get about 21fps playback on a 25p package. I can play the DPX sequence that was used to create this package at full speed, no problem.

I'm seeing 100% utilisation on my CPU while playing the IMF, but I'm surprised that this codec is so heavy to play. Can anyone give me info on this? Many thanks!

The easyDCP plugin may perform better. It usually does. Check the codec. Often the video essence is JPEG2000 based.

Hey, yes it is JPEG2000 based. It's only a 600Mb/s video stream so I really don't get why it's so taxing on my computer.

Your CPU seems unable to handle the decoding process.

Im not sure if this is available in your Resolve but see if this is active (attached)...

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and it didn't help with playback, so I am assuming that JPEG2000 is a seriously tough format to play back.

I would like to recommend to anyone reading this to not enable EasyDCP though, because it removes the Create Timeline from Composition Playlist option from the contextual menu. This had me panicking for a while there.

Fact it's 600mbit or 4Gbits or 3mbit is irrelevant. It's math behind the codec which kills your CPU. JPEG2000 is very demanding ad it's normal that even today's CPUs struggle with it. You need to lower resolution or use better decoder (like easyDCP) which is GPU based.
