requesting help with set up; recs for best training videos

PostThu May 25, 2023 10:51 pm

Hello forum!

I would appreciate your advice on set up, and recommendations of the best training videos for using Resolve Studio 18.1 (and Fairlight) as designed. I'd prefer quality training whether it's free or not. I'm coming from Premiere Pro but I'm planning on learning the native keystrokes for Resolve. On an experience scale from 0 to 5 for NLE apps, I'm currently a 2 for picture edit and maybe a 0.5 or 1 for sound edit and color. I have no plans to level up with VFX past the most elementary things that a non-VFX editor might use occasionally.

iMac, late 2015
Mac OS Monterey 12.6
processor: 4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
memory: 32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4 GB
SSD built in
externals include: G Drive and Lacie through USB 3 (type A)
-have Thunderbolt ports

My sound design and color grading plans split into:
A) trying to become a good amateur for some projects
or
B) hiring for other projects

current set up
:
Resolve Studio 18.1 installed normally
Resolve system setting: first media storage location is on built-in SSD drive

Requesting advice and suggestions on:
1) any other settings
2) most useful color profile for iMac with Resolve Studio
3) would consider an inexpensive color monitor if it's significantly better than iMac, and fits the 'good amateur' plan for when I'm my own colorist
4) best training videos
5) other resources like where the best explanation of each tool resides on the internet, etc

This topic was originally posted to "Getting Started" due to the description of that part of the forum:
"Getting started with a Blackmagic product? Ask questions here about setup and installation."

I'm now seeing materials and so on. I'd still appreciate advice if anyone has anything to say about 1 through 5 in my original post.

I think the best training for Resolve newcomers are the training manuals.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks Jim!

Is there a calibrated display that most agree is the best inexpensive one?

Well...I'm hearing that Disney is starting to fill their Dolby Vision grading suites with LG OLED's.

But I don't really work at that level myself. Marc and Walter here on the forums do, though.
