Multipass H264 Encodes have no Video?

PostTue May 30, 2023 10:06 am

Hi All,

I'm trying to create lowbitrate film festival screeners with some challenging mixed footage (high/low noise, jungles, peoples faces) and am trying to use mutlipass h264 encodes in Resolve (18.1.4 Intel Mac) to get the most out of the file. Single pass encodes work fine.

However, when trying to do a multipass encode at any bitrate, Resolve does FIVE passes of the video and then outputs a .mov file which has no video track, audio only. Export Video is definitely checked. Any idea what's causing this, or a way around it?

Thanks - Tom

I'm sorry what now?

Can you share the Video settings panel in Deliver?

Maybe try a different approach. Try these settings, adjusting only Resolution, Frame rate and Keyframes accordingly.

If the size ends up too large, increase the three 22's in the middle to 26's.

Export a master file from Resolve and reexport that from an actually *GOOD h264 encoder like Handbrake.
Compare the results on a timeline. Handbrake beats Resolve in any bitrate.

Hi Jim, thanks for the tip, but I don't have those options on my panel. May I ask which version of Resolve you are using?

Jim likes to post those settings, but some of these are hardware specific.
Rather export in a ProRes 422 HQ and do the final compression in HandBrake.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

That was from 18, non-beta.

But it does presume nVidia hardware.

Interesting, didn't realise it changed based on hardware. I'm on AMD Which seems to be less configurable.. Thanks Jim & Uli for letting me know.

So looks like I'll be using Handbrake for now - Many thanks to you all for your suggestions.
