Optimized FPS for GoPro Vidéo

PostWed May 31, 2023 9:36 pm

Hello everyone, I'm reaching out for your help as a beginner on this software.

I've been following numerous tutorials online to understand the various mechanisms

However, I have a specific question: I have a GOPRO 11 that records by default at 29.970 FPS (according to the Inspector). The slow-motion footage doesn't look very smooth. Do you have any advice?

Would you recommend leaving the Frame Rate Project at 29.970 or lowering it to 25 or 24 for better results? Thank you very much for the time you're taking to guide me

What is your final destination, how many fps?
And then, did you use NR filters in daylight? If not, the GoPro would shoot very short exposure times. You can only try to add artificial motion blur in DR Studio. Or do you want to generate slo-mo in post?
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thanks you for replying.

If you speak about export, I don't know yet but I was thinking about 1080P 24, 25 or 30 (I will try many option).

I think the problem is my projet have the same FPS thant my vidéo rush, so when I try low motion, I have motion blur. Maybe I should import my 30 FPS rush in a 24 or 25 FPS Project, so I will have more image/sec when I slow the video. What do you think?

(sorry for my bad english)

If you want smooth slow-motion, you need to record double the final framerate, i.e. if you play out at 24 fps, record at 48 fps and slow down 0.5 at max.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

On an existing clip, you can slow down with the help of Speed Warp, but it’s very slow if you don’t have a beast of a computer.

OK that's make sense. So I suppose I have to record at 48/50 FPS and setup my project's setting at 50 FPS and slow down at 0.5

I will try this! I have a i5 13k6 CPU and RTX3060 GPU. But it's seems it's a feature in DR Studio

Others have already given a number of good recommendations so I won't be rehashing them. What I will do is remind you that Hero 11 is capable of 4K 60fps and 120fps and that it's defaults can be changed.

Also, there are slow motion related third party tools like Twixtor and Topaz Video AI that might be able to help you with footage you already recorded (with fair warning that they are not free and I don' know how good are they).

Neither of these is better than Speed Warp. Twixtor is very similar to the other Optical Flow options in DR with some masking features added. Topaz is about as good as DR and can be a bit faster, depending on hardware.
In the future, make your timeline 30 fps for presentation on the internet. Record 60 or 120 fps and slow down in the Clip Attributes or by speed change, DR will use all frames available in the source.

Could you confirm me that if I records in 60 FPS, I have to configure my project's settings at 60 FPS. So when I slowmotion to 50%, my frame rate will be 30 FPS?

If my project is configure to 30 FPS, when I slow down at 50%, my FR drop at 15 FPS :/

I saw lot of youtube video that recommand to set project's settings at 24 FPS for a "cinema" look like effect. But If you do this, your Frame Rate will be to short to do any slowmotion effect (without optical flow / SpeedWarp) or maybe I am missing something..

Here is my DR configuration currently (see screenshoot)

Sorry, you still don't get it. Set your timeline to 30 fps (or to 24, if you like).
Then slow your clip, which was shot in 60 fps, down to the speed of the timeline in its Clip Attributes.

Or slow it down directly in the timeline.
