Limiter doesn't really limit?

PostMon Jun 05, 2023 8:43 pm

Hey,
I want to understand the structure of the Fairlight considering the master bus.
If I set some effects (AU or VST plugins), I let the limiter end the effect chain. But I still see some overdrive with activated limiter. In other DAW, I worked with, it was impossible. So what's the point about that in DR?

Cheers

The Fairlight Dynamics Processor's Limiter is not a Brickwall Limiter and behaves more like a traditional analogue Peak Limiter (e.g. UREI 1176 Limiting Amplifier which is a Dynamic Range Downward Compressor with a ratio of 8:1 or higher, where 12:1 is considered mild limiting, and 20:1 hard limiting).

The Fairlight Limiter is a Downward Compressor with a fixed ratio of 20:1, the maximum ratio available on the Fairlight Compressor (and the maximum ratio available on the UREI 1176), so its behaviour will be very different to that of a Brickwall Limiter.

The Fairlight Limiter AFX provides True Peak Limiting with 64 samples lookahead, and is a more appropriate choice if a Brickwall Limiter is required.
