Bizarre and very confusing bug on DaVinci Resolve

PostThu Jun 08, 2023 9:23 pm

Hi everyone,

I have encountered a very strange glitch or error with DaVinci Resolve that I cannot seem to solve.

Here are some of the issues:

- Crashes all the time

- The timeline placer does not move in time to the visuals

- Crashes when I try to export a project

- Crashes when the project saves

- Crashes when I try to export the project

- Exports the project and it crashes

- When exporting a video, the video exports as a black video that does not play

- Some video clips are listed as offline when this is not the case

I have not been having these problems all morning however when I tried to open up an unrelated video on VLC on my computer this caused Resolve to become unresponsive and I needed to open up task manager (this is on a PC) to restart Resovle which caused the issues.

I have tried opening the same project on multiple computers and I have encounted the same error messages. I am a university student and we are working on a projects that are supported by severs from which to access the project from. I have attached my Resolve logs before the crash if they help to solve the problem.

Thank you!

Bizarre Resolve Bug rendering me unable to use the programme

PostFri Jun 09, 2023 5:12 am

Hi everyone,

When try to open a Resolve project (any Resolve project) Resolve:

- Crashes all the time

- The timeline placer does not move in time to the visuals

- Crashes when I try to export a project

- Crashes when the project saves

- Crashes when I try to export the project

- Crashes when trying to export a project

- When exporting a video, the video exports as a black video that does not play

- Some video clips are listed as offline when this is not the case

I am a current university student and I think this problem first occurred when I was trying to watch a video on VLC at the same time as working on DaVinci Resolve, even though I have done this before and had no problems. Resolve crashed when I opened the video on VLC and I had to force Resolve to force quit which is the thing that caused the problems.

I have tried to restart my computer and DaVinci Resolve several times with no success. I have also worked on several computers as our computers are connected via a server and I have also had no success. I have attached my Resolve log for reference if anyone is interested.

Thank you!

Not saying that it's the solution, but worth a try, Dwaine from BM often suggests this:

"Somehow, multiple files in your Preferences folder are corrupt.

Open File Explorer Options, and on the View tab, enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then in File Explorer, navigate to this folder:

C:\Users\bbrow\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

Rename the Preferences folder to Preferences.old

Now Resolve should start.

It will have all the Resolve preferences set to default values.

If you had more than the standard default "Local Database" project library, those will not be shown. You'll need select the "Add Project Library" button and then select the "Connect" item, then enter the name and location of the project library(s). You can find that info in the dblist.conf file in the Preferences.old folder.

And if you had any other Resolve Preferences items modified from their default values, you'll need to modify those again as desired."
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Do you have same problems when you don't try to use shared projects but one created from scratch by you?

BTW, if opening up a video with VLC causes freeze of Resolve I would suspect either instability of system or you not having enough of VRAM.

Thanks for both of your replies. I managed to fix the issue by deleting folders in the ClipCatch folder which was causing a lack of space on shared server space.

I am guessing, as you have provided no system information, that you might be using an AMD GPU. If that is the case there have been problems with some of their drivers. Have a read through of the posts in this thread.https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=180252

He posted logs on his original post, which show he’s using a Dell Precision 5820 Tower— Quadro P2200 with an older driver (517.37), Windows 10 Education, 64GB ram, i9-10920X, Resolve v18.1.1.0007.

Ah yes, Resolve always just assumes the user has enough space, and can cause all sorts of odd problems like this, giving zero clue to the user. Glad you got it fixed!
