Sort by date modified / created not working

PostWed Aug 02, 2023 3:33 pm

Hi,

trying to use the sorting by date modified in media pool in the "Cut" phase and it is simply not working at all.

I do not understand how something so simple does not work.

I'm seeing weirdness here as well.

My clips get sorted properly by date, but in reverse order by time.

Re: Sort by date modified / created not working

I figured out that the way they sort by "date modified" is to take the date from "date modified" and the time of the day from "Start TC". Need I say how misleading and ridiculous this is?

Luckily shutter encoder had a feature to take the time from "date modified" and put it in the "Start TC".

What's even more ridiculous to me is that DaVinci can not sort by "Media Created" metadata AT ALL in the "Cut" tab. Since date created & date modified are always the moment you copied them from your camera etc. Because of this I had to use a BulkFileChanger to take the data from "Media Created" field and put it in "date modified".

It's still backwards. Clips shot earlier in the day are lower in the list when they should be higher based on the Sort.

Re: Sort by date modified / created not working

Just installed 18.6.2 and this problem persists.

What's even more frustrating is that sorting the media folder in the Edit page by Date Modified works fine, but in the Cut Page it doesn't. This means my new Speed Editor is somewhat useless as source tape is not chronological, so I just go to the Edit Page and use the mouse and keyboard as I was doing before the purchase.

Come on guys, this MUST be a simple fix, it's only a sort order!

Hit column header and they will re-order. This will also re-sort if you have added anything else. Works like any other column in Windows. Not tried on my Studio Max as all the source files are on my PC. Just checked in 18.6.2 and works on EDIT and CUT pages.

Files I checked are from my family folder and cover 1999 to 2001, variety of cameras. Sorted by date modified. They are then shown by month as expected.

I think the problem is something to do with Start TC (or my understanding or what sort by Modified Date actually means).

In cut page sort order is File Modified date only + Start TC. In edit page it is File Modified date + File Modified time (Start TC is ignored).

Being a new forum user I'm not sure I can attach pngs to show the differences.

In any of the tables it will sort by the column you click the top heading. Just clicking the top heading will alternate sorting ascending or descending. So you are telling the table to sort by the column you click and then you can decide whether to list as ascending or descending.

Here's the Cut page with Date Modified as the selected column, and Descending order is also selected. As in the Media and Edit pages this is not governed by the clips timecode, unless that is what you have selected to sort by.

Here's a project with clips from different years. Date Modified is selected as is Ascending order. The Source Tape matches the order of the clips. The play head is on clip 2 in the Source Tape, and is highlighted in the Date Modified column.

My cut page view.

Selected column is Date Modified, Ascending

As you can see a file timed at 09:32 comes after a file timed at 15:25. My only thought is that the Start TC forms part of this sort.

Now this may be as it is supposed to be. But it does not make sense to me.

Edit page then had different order.

My solution is as follows, with the help of a python script:
Code: Select all
pm = resolve.GetProjectManager()
proj = pm.GetCurrentProject()
mp = proj.GetMediaPool()
bin = mp.GetCurrentFolder()
print('in bin ', bin.GetName())
clips = bin.GetClips()

x = 0
y = 0
for i in clips:
    propDateModified = (clips[i].GetClipProperty('Date Modified'))
    propScene = (clips[i].GetClipProperty("Scene"))
    x += 1
    if propScene != "00:00:00;00":
        clips[i].SetClipProperty("Scene", propDateModified)
        print (propScene)
        y += 1

print ('End of script')
print ('Number of clip found:')
print (x)
print ('Number of "scene" modify:')
print (y)

Here the property "Date Modified" is copied into the property of the "Scene" and then sort by the property "Scene" in the Cut Page.

Just to confirm that even the new Resolve 19 has the same bug (that apparently is meant as a feature) and that Python script solves the issue. Well kinda - you now have to sort by Scene not by Date. I might understand the idea behind using timecodes, but in the real world a lot of people use Resolve for editing videos shot on all kinds of cameras and mixing content shot on camera-cameras, action-cameras, drones etc. and their TC is all over the place.

The only problem now is, that by sorting by Scene, the Thumbnail view is like this. But it's a small price to pay to be able to finally use source tape in Cut page to wade through all footage shot on different cameras in a chronological order. Like it supposed to work out of the box.

Any chance one of you clever programmer types could modify this script to put the day part into "scene" and time part into "Shot" ?

For example:

"Date modified" = Fri Jul 19 2024 08:27:45 would go to
"Scene" = Fri Jul 19 2024
"Shot" = 08:27:45

I think this would give you a better layout on the Cut page and also allow auto-created smart bins for each day "scene."

I would be eternally grateful ! :)

Oops nevermind !

I realized there is a problem with this approach:

date modified is a DATE data type
Scene and Shot are STRING data types.

These will not sort dates properly.

(PS This may also explain why some of us are seeing odd results when sorting on the Cut page.)

I agree entirely. I make travelogs and use a professional(ish) grade camera for my main shots but then supplement that with Action Cameras, Drone footage and mobile footage. The final 3 have no form of timecode.

I fail to understand why in the list of ways of sorting you don't have the option of "Modified Date + TC" and plain "Modified Date". It's just the sort order.

Perhaps BM don't understand the frustration it causes and how it makes the Cut page and Speed Editor almost useless. Anyone know how to request a feature update??

***FIXED*** Sort by date modified / created not working

PostWed Oct 16, 2024 12:31 am

Hi, Working on the great script by orko_DK I have updated it to store the clip's "modified" date and time attributes in scene name as YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS. No Timestamp data is added.

THIS ALLOWS SORTING BY SCENE WITHOUT THE TIMESTAMP DATA AND MAKES THE CUT PAGE / SPEED EDITOR WORTHWHILE USING. [Assumes you have date & time set correctly on your various cameras.]

NOTE: I am not a programmer, use the script at your own peril, but it works fine for me. If you already have data in the scene tag IT WILL BE OVERWRITTEN.
Code: Select all
pm = resolve.GetProjectManager()
proj = pm.GetCurrentProject()
mp = proj.GetMediaPool()
bin = mp.GetCurrentFolder()
print('Adding Scene properties to clips in bin ', bin.GetName())
clips = bin.GetClips()

y = 0
for i in clips:
    propDateModified = (clips[i].GetClipProperty('Date Modified'))
    propYear = propDateModified[20:24]
    propTime = propDateModified[11:19]
    propDayNo = propDateModified[8:10]
    if propDayNo[0:1] == ' ' : propDayNo = '0' + propDayNo[1:2]
    if propDateModified[4:7] == 'Jan' : propMonth = '01-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Feb' : propMonth = '02-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Mar' : propMonth = '03-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Apr' : propMonth = '04-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'May' : propMonth = '05-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Jun' : propMonth = '06-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Jul' : propMonth = '07-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Aug' : propMonth = '08-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Sep' : propMonth = '09-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Oct' : propMonth = '10-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Nov' : propMonth = '11-'
    elif propDateModified[4:7] == 'Dec' : propMonth = '12-'
    else : propMonth = '??-'
    propSceneDate = propYear + '-' + propMonth + propDayNo + ' ' + propTime
    clips[i].SetClipProperty("Scene", propSceneDate)
    y += 1

print ('=== Script completed successfully ===')
print ('Number of Scene properties modified: ', y)

You will need to have Python3 loaded on your machine and know how to use the Console & Scripts within the Workspace menu.

It's so frustrating that this is still a problem. When I mix my XT5 footage with my gopro footage, it's all out of order. The only solution is to use a bulk file renaming utility and rename all the footage to the date/time then sort by name in Resolve. Crazy that I've been using resolve for 5 years and had to do this stupid work around just to get my clips in proper order.

Have you tried using separate bins, one for the GoPro footage and one for the XT5? That way they won't be mixed together.

Also....

@ FreeRider

If you modify your script to put the day part in SCENE and the time part in SHOT you should be able to get the CUT page to group into days... might be nice.

(I don't use the cut page so this is of less interest to me; I have my own script that I use for burn-in that includes the text day (e.g FRI, SAT, etc.) as I find that nicer to look at).

How is *still* an issue after five years?
And why don't Black Magic even bother to respond?

Like another poster pointed out, it means we can't use the source tape and it significantly reduces the value of the speed editor.

Unbelievable poor attitude from Black Magic.

Okay, I think I have a solution.

*Column Layout Impacts Sort Order*
It seems that if I uncheck "Start TC" from the column layout then it will actually sort by "date modified." If "Start TC" is left in the column header, then it will sort by "Modified Date" but with "Start TC" instead of the actual date time. Also, this must be done in both "source clip" & "Source Tape" views as these appear to be treated individually.

*Edit*
Okay, behavior is still unpredictable. Sometimes it correctly sorts by date modified but, in switching from timeline back into source tape, sometimes it resets to sorting by "TC"? I can add "Start TC" to column and then remove and then resort "ascending / descending" and it will, again, sort correctly by "date modified".

I still do not fully understand what is happening and what causes reset but it is very annoying. If I do not notice the behavior has changed, then my timeline is created out of order....
