Magic Mask - Hardware usage

PostThu Aug 03, 2023 8:43 am

Hi,
for an upcoming project I probably will have to use magic masks. I tried it out on a test project. They work really good. Unfortunately they take ages to process. I'm talking about 3min for a 20s clip.
My CPU (5950X) is sitting at around 5% load and my graphics card (7900XTX) is at 2% load.
Using Resolve Studio 18.5. All media is on SSD. Cache is on an NVME.
Media used is 4K H264 at 60fps

Any suggestions how to speed up the process?

If you cache all the source clips to DNxHR 10 bit.. does that change the magic mask speed?

I have my render cache format set to DNxHR LB.
But even with a fully cached clip without edits, MM stays unusably slow without any hardware usage.
I rembember I got a popup while MM was working on the previous versions. I don't get one with 18.5

I got the same problem. Using magic mask on a 31 minute clip fhd 30 fps takes about 2hours an a few minutes. It says the rendering speed is about 6fps... Using your method with changing the format gave me 7fps speed. That is nowhere useable. I am using a 7900xt and a 7700x as GPU/CPU combination. Is that related to AMD or in other words does using a Nvidia GPU speed up the process?

Faster hardware. ;)

(Not being sarcastic. That's about all we can do here.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

To be fair, that doesn't sound like the sort of typical use case for which the function was designed.

I tried magic mask(Better) on a wardrobe 4K60 footage on 4K timeline using a single stroke - RTX 4090
100% GPU power 30fps
50% GPU power 29fps
25% GPU power 14fps
I also tried 5 strokes at 100%, oddly fastest speed of 31fps

GPU useage around 90% for all of them.
Sounds like you do have a problem, but also MagicMask may behave widely differently depending on the scene. I know I"ve seen much slower
