Sony 10bit 4:2:2 footage in Davinci Resolve 18.6

PostSun Sep 17, 2023 5:15 pm

Hey all

I'm a recent started with Davinci Resolve (and have found this forum pretty invaluable in that, so thanks all). I have a Sony A6700 which records 10bit H265 files in 4:2:2. I'm running Windows 11 and I have the HEVC Video Extensions paid for and installed in the Microsoft Store.

I, like others, have found that if I try to bring one of the videos recorded on my A6700 into DR I get audio only. I saw in the release notes for DR 18.6:

• Ability to decode Sony XAVC H and XAVC HS clips.

Unfortunately I still get audio only when bringing these clips in in DR 18.6. I wondered, as others have, if DR Studio is required for importing in 10 bit files, but if I use ffmpeg to re-encode to a ProRes 422 file or a DNxHR HQX I can import these files and they seem to keep their full bit depth. It also seems to work fine on my iPad using DR for iPad.

If the answer is I need to buy Studio then fair enough, just wondered given I can get other 10bit files to work.

Yes you'd need studio.

But do you have the hardware to decode HEVC 4.2.2? Unless you have a recent Intel IGPU you might want to keep transcoding.

Thanks! I actually don't know hardware wise what's required - good question. I have an Intel i9-12900K with a GeForce RTX3080. I don't know if that's powerful enough.

I'm prett sure the 12900K has an onboard iGPU that will do 10-bit 422

Ya you just need to make sure it's turned on. Both in the bios and in Resolves decode section
