Audio Output Stops After Playing Audio With Outside Program

PostSat Sep 23, 2023 2:13 am

I searched the Blackmagic Forum but didn't see anything for this particular issue. I am running Windows 11 Pro on a Minisforum UM690.

DaVinci Resolve works fine with no issues, until I click on another program that uses audio -- YouTube, Media Player, Amazon Music, etc. When I switch context back to DaVinci, there is no sound. I can click a YouTube video, let it run for 5 secs, switch back to DaVinci, and the sound will no longer work. The meters are jumping, but there is no sound output. If I close DaVinci and reopen it, sound output works normally. This behavior is consistent with the last several versions of DaVinci, with no deviation.

It seems there is a prioritization issue at hand, so I gave Resolve.exe a higher priority in the OS, but it didn't work. In Davinci's Audio I/O Preferences, I have also used every combination of "Use system settings", "Automatic speaker configuration", and manually specifying the output device, with no resolution. The I/O Engine is System Audio.

On the Windows side, I have tried all of the different combinations of Exclusive Mode settings for the output device properties. Again, here I was thinking it was a priority thing, but this didn't work either. It may exist, but I don't see a way to set specific app priority for sound in Windows 11.

I seem to remember a fix on some obscure forum for this but I couldn't find it. I also seem to remember a video that discussed a way to reset sound from within DaVinci to make it work, but I can't find that either (I'd gladly take hitting a button to do that). Any help from the community is appreciated, if any of you have seen something similar. Thanks.

What is your audio hardware? Just the mobo sound? Or something else?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I'm using the on-board chipset audio with headphones. As an aside, I've discovered that when the sound stops working but I leave it playing in DaVinci, if I go back into whatever program (YouTube, for example) and start playing, the sound starts working in DaVinci, as well. Then, if I again stop the outside source from playing, DaVinci will continue to output sound for a few seconds and then stop again, even thought the meters are still bouncing.

I want to say I've seen something similar to this on one of my Linux boxes that was caused by some Bluetooth weirdness. I'm going to clean out anything Bluetooth related, disable Bluetooth, reinstall audio related sound drivers, and reset the Windows audio settings to defaults.

I'm running into the exact same issue. Sound goes away when an external app is playing audio and the only way Resolve plays audio again is if I'm playing audio at the same time on the other app or change the Output Device in Preferences to something else>save>back to Use System Settings>save, then it works again. Or I restart Resolve. Capcut desktop also does the exact same thing, this seems like such a weird and small issue to still be having after all these years.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Thanks.

My issue was being connected directly via Bluetooth. If I obfuscate the Bluetooth connection by having a Bluetooth Transmitter/Receiver connected, sitting between the speaker and the computer, the issue went away.

REMIXING ANOTHER OF MY POSTS

I plugged the transmitter/receiver in to USB to power it on, set it to transmitter mode (sound FROM computer TO Bluetooth device), and paired it to my Bluetooth speaker. I then connected the transmitter/receiver 3.5mm audio jack to the computer's audio jack. It has been rock solid, when switching focus from Davinci to an outside audio source. The OS sees the transmitter as an always connected, wired connection, while the speaker sees it as a standard Bluetooth connection. This works on Windows and Mac. I got the UGREEN BT TX/RX linked below, but any similar device should work.
