Blackmagic Proxy Generator Not Existing

PostTue Sep 26, 2023 12:25 am

I've checked all install folders for the DaVinci Resolve Studio edition and can't seem to find the proxy generator anywhere. Even searching all of Windows nets nothing. Why would the DaVinci Resolve 18.6 installer not check to see if the proxy generator is there?

There is not a separate proxy generator app. It uses the C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Resolve.exe app.

In Windows Programs, in the Blackmagic Design folder, you should see the Blackmagic Proxy Generator selection.

And if you right click that and select More - Open file location, it will show you the Blackmagic Proxy Generator shortcut icon in the C:\Users\"user_name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve folder.

And if you right click that and select Properties, you'll see it does this:

"C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Resolve.exe" -pg

I checked the start menu folder and didn't find it, which was odd. Could it be because I've been upgrading since Resolve 15? It's the reason that ACES still defaults to 1.1 on my computer, for instance.
On my Mac, Blackmagic Proxy Generator shows up fine.

That's because it IS a separate app on the Mac. It is NOT a separate app on Windows.

If you select the Windows Start menu and then the Blackmagic Design folder, you don't have a Blackmagic Proxy Generator selection, as shown in my screen shot below?

I do not have one in my start menu. It's very strange as no Resolve update has made it show up...

I don't have it in the start menu or on any folder in my computer. Did the update installer mess up at some point and a current update installer never caught the issue?

Ok I just found it as a shortcut in program files exactly where you found it. I wonder why it never showed up in the start menu or any searches of the computer... Anyway, thanks for your help.

Now I just need to find a way to get it into that Blackmagic start folder so Windows search stops breaking.

I just opened it up and found there is no DNxHR LB option? This immediately makes it less useful than the built in proxy generator even though the built in one is far slower. This is unfortunate and I hope in the future there are closer options to Mac given DNxHR has better live performance than H264 or H265.

Did you do a clean install of Resolve by uninstalling the previous version in Control Panel/Programs and Features first? If not, try it.

I mean it seems not too worth it in the first place at this point given I have better proxy options in the software at the cost of render time. I may just pin the program to start to make it show up. Maybe in windows it should be made a separate program instead of DaVinci with a command so Windows doesn’t glitch like this and not show the program at all.

It is well worth it. Just installing over previous versions can cause problems. It is possibly the cause of Windows not showing the Proxy Generator in the Start Menu.

Doesn't seem worth it though since it doesn't have any non-H.264/5 options. The Mac version has ProRes so why doesn't the Windows one have DNxHR?
