Exporting Subtitles to be Used as a Video Layer

PostWed Oct 11, 2023 3:40 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on how to export a subtitle track with an alpha channel, and maintain the drop shadow on the subtitles. I am exporting DNxHR 444.

When I bring in the resulting quicktime and add drop it onto the timeline, the alpha works but the drop shadow is missing.

Anyone come across this before? How do I get around this without having to layer the output I've done and use the bottom layer as a drop shadow?

Cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank,

I found a way to trick resolve to export subs with alpha channel and shadows etc.

You simply drop a png image with transparent in the timeline drag it from the beginning of your timeline to the end. With transform--> position move it out of the frame so you can not see it. Resolve thinks that it has to render a transparent image through the timeline.

Then export Apple ProRes with alpha channel, that it!!

Hope it works for you.

Best,
Panos
