Windows - Where are Resolve files stored?

PostWed Dec 20, 2023 12:36 am

Hi,

A thread in this forum says the Resolve various files are stored in these locations:

C:\Users\All Users\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support
C:\Users\All Users\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences
C:\Users\(You)\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support
C:\Users\(You)\Documents\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve
C:\Users\All Users\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Fusion

Windows 11 doesn't have some of those folders (eg there's no All Users folder).

What are the Windows 11 equivalents?

Thanks,
Robert

The folder C:\Users\All Users is a symbolic link to C:\ProgramData . They're two names for the same folder. It is there because many older programs used hard-coded paths to access the folder which doesn't exist any more.

Thank you.

So I can just copy the Windows 10 files into the new Windows 11 folders, correct?

Thanks again,
Robert

Why are you doing that? You should use the Resolve installer to ensure proper paths are created and files put in proper places.

I've already installed Studio 18.6.4 on my new Windows 11 machine. I used the same zip file I'd used on my Windows 10 machine.

Now I want to restore my old environment -- Favorites, bins, plugins, templates, saved objects eg customized Text boxes, etc.

Will copying the old Windows 10 Davinci Resolve files into the new Windows 11 locations accomplish that?

Or is there something else I need to do? eg do i need to reinstall all my plugins? What about customized objects I've made using my plugins?

Thanks,
Robert

Then try copying this folder:

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design (where user_name is your Windows User name)

And this folder:

C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design

If you are only using the default Local Database Local Project Library, this will bring your projects over.

If you are using additional Local Project Libraries, you'll have to copy the folders those files are in as well. Or better yet, on the Windows 10 machine, make Project Library backups, and restore those on the Windows 11 machine.

Yes, you will need to reinstall your plugins.

Thank you.

Are those Windows 10 folders? If yes then to where should I copy them? What should be the destination folders on my Windows 11 machine?

The same folders exist in Windows 11 but they are hidden by default. You can access them by entering their address in the address bar of Windows Explorer, or you can enable to display hidden files in the Explorer settings.

@Robert:

Open File Explorer Options, and on the View tab, enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".

That should allow you to see the folders.

Thank you both.

@Dwaine,

I've done that with Folder Options. So I just copy those Windows 10 folders into the same file paths in Windows 11? Sorry for that basic question, I just want to make sure I don't screw up anything.

There's a hidden .license file mentioned in another thread that also says to delete that file.

My Studio license is still up to date, of course.

Are there any files in those folders that I need to delete? or do I just copy them all over wholesale?

Thanks again,
Robert

I would rename the existing Win11 folders with a .bak, or something like that, and then copy in the Win10 folders wholesale. That way if something goes wrong, you can just put the original folders back.

Good point about the Studio activation code. You'll need to activate on the Win11 machine, so just make sure you have your activation code handy. Ideally, deactivate the license on the Win10 machine, if you don't plan to use Resolve on that system going forward. You do that from the Resolve Help menu.

Thanks. Yes, I'd planned to rename the existing Windows 11 files by adding -old to their filenames.

I've activated Studio on my new machine and will deactivate it as soon as I get my new environment up and running well enough to take over the full workload from the old environment.

Thanks again for all the help and guidance.
