Davinci Resolve Fairlight closes software

PostThu Feb 01, 2024 4:40 pm

I've been using Fairlight to edit podcasts, and it has been working very well for a long time but has suddenly given me issues. Resolve seems to work fine with all other functions, but as soon as I do anything in Fairlight (I can open the tab with no issues, but as soon as I click in the window with the sound files) the software freezes and closes after a short while. It does not go "Not responding".

It seems to save my progress before closing. There are no error logs and I have done no updates.

Tried downgrading from 18.6.4 to 18.5.1 but that did nothing to the issue.

I've been through most GPU-related fixes, and nothing has changed on my side hardware-wise.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

try, remove your audio interface in resolve preferences

power restart the computer

see if it behaves ok with no interface, if so then reconnect and configure.

I'm not using any audio interface. I'm just working on recorded mp3 files.

Fnally found the posting trick, see the dropbox folder for DxDiag, System.nfo and sample mp3 (all audio files causes the same issue though)

I figured I'd try without any sound at all, just a couple of pictures repeating. Same issue. Pressing Play on the Fairlight page closes the software.

I found the issue, it was in the GPU driver. Found the windows error log, with module igdrcl64.dll failing. This is related to the Intel GPU driver, so I got new drivers directly from Intel (not through Microsoft which is supposed to deliver it to the Surface Laptops) and lo and behold - it works again!

No, scrap that - issue persists.

Error: Resolve.exe, versjon: 18.6.4.6
Modulename with error: igdrcl64.dll, versjon: 23.20.101.2127

I assume this is GPU driver related, any suggestions?

So, got the latest version of Resolve again: 18.6.5.7
Did another test, turning on Mixer in the Edit-page caused the same issue!

It could be system related, can you post your system specs…
are you using any AI related process on mp3.
can you transcode it to wav and try.

Please read the entire thread before responding. Everything systems-related is in the dropbox folder in the previous posts.
Using a wav-format does not change anything.
I'm not doing anything besides cutting mp3-files and utilising the mixer.

From what I can see, the issue is still GPU-related and related to the OpenGL-file igdrcl64.dll
Why this suddenly has given me issues is odd to me.

We need a Resolve diagnostics log in addition to the 3 files already in your Dropbox folder.

Generate that from the Resolve Help menu: Create Diagnostics Log on Desktop

Diagnostics log created and uploaded. The latest instance of software closing was 08.02.2024 05:21:36 - restarted the software and created the log (with no logged crash since 2023).

Your Surface Pro 7 has this Intel GPU driver installed:

31.0.101.2127

But Resolve crashing is being caused by this Intel GPU driver component:

igdrcl64.dll, versjon: 23.20.101.2125

My suggestion would be to DDU remove the Intel GPU driver, and reinstall it.

However, Microsoft doesn't have individual drivers for things. Just one big 680 MB file with apparently all the Surface Pro 7 driver stuff in it. Not being familiar with Surface Pro driver updates, I'm not sure how you would reinstall just the Intel GPU driver.

Hopefully you have a better idea of Surface Pro driver details. If push came to shove, you could go to the Intel driver downloads site and user their auto driver update app.

This is a link to a forum thread on how to use DDU to remove the Intel GPU driver:

Removed driver, installed anew directly from Intel manually - Resolve now fails at:
igdrcl64.dll, version: 23.20.101.2127

I'm really curious what this issue is :|

It seems like an Intel GPU driver that doesn't work with Resolve.

In Windows System Information - Components - Display, what does that show for Driver Version?

The driver you had was from June 2023. This driver is very recent. So can't get any better than that, I guess.

Is this issue only happening with the RoW_I1-I3 project? If you start a new project and select the Fairlight page, does it crash?

If it's only happening with this project, please send a project export .drp of the project, You can make that by opening the Resolve Project Manager window, right clicking on the project and selecting Export Project.

Just before the crash, there are several "immersive" type error messages, which I don't see locally with just a normal audio file loaded. Are you doing something like Dolby audio in the project? Are you selecting a particular item on the Fairlight page that leads to the crash?

I've tried with old projects, new projects, projects without sound files, and I did a full clean install of Resolve and the issue persisted.

I'm not sure what happened, but after a day it started working with the new drivers. All well and good until Windows Update figured it wanted the Intel drivers it used to have back and updated - now it closes again. Dammit.

I'll give the DDU another try and see if I can decline the Windows Update until it has the right set of drivers for me.

I procured a Surface Pro 7 for some testing.

I've tested a bunch of Intel drivers using a project provided by Adeline in this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=195748

She also has a Surface Pro 7, with an i5-1035G4 CPU, having similar Resolve crashing issues.

Unfortunately, Intel only provides 3 drivers for the i5-1035G4 CPU, and none of those worked well. Adeline's project randomly crashed using any of those.

(Magnus, I know you have an i7-1065G7 CPU in your Surface Pro 7, and I tested a system that matches Adeline's, but the driver below should work for your system as well since it's the same Ice Lake series CPU).

So I had to resort to Softpedia for older drivers. And they have 8 Intel graphics drivers for this CPU.

I tested all the newer 31.0.101 series drivers. They all randomly crash. The 2115 driver worked for an hour, and I thought that was going to be the winner, then it also crashed.

So continuing to go to older drivers, the one I find that seems to work is the 30.0.100.9864 driver.

I've run Adeline's project overnight with no crashing using the 9864 driver, so that seems about as solid as we could hope for a system like this.

Download the driver here:

https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPH ... 9864.shtml

Click the Download Now tab, then select the Softpedia Secure Download (US) EXE option. You could try the External Mirror links, but none of those worked for me.

Once you have the igfx_win_100.9864.exe downloaded, use DDU to uninstall the current Intel GPU driver. For the sake of anyone not familiar with that process, this forum thread describes it:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=119852&hilit=%2Bddu#p659861

The Intel GPU removal process should end with a reboot of the system. Then run the 9864 driver installer you downloaded above. After it's finished, do another reboot. Now, hopefully, Resolve runs better. It is for me. I'll note that I'm testing with the Resolve 18.6.5 free version.

Wow, that much of an effort to help those with a system that's really at the edge of what's needed for DR.
Respect! I hope that silences some of the those complaining about lack of support.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Yes, this was above and beyond for sure! I assume it was a curious enough incident that it scratched that need-to-know itch! It seems to be working for me with this solution, I'll see if Windows Update screws me over again later and updates the driver against my will!

Thank you very much!
I'll keep you posted if it breaks again.

I've been scratching my head again today with Resolve crashing again unexpectedly, despite the fix described above, i.e. installing an older Intel driver *and* disabling the automatic device driver update.
It turns out that Windows Update has ignored the latter setting and has re-updated my Intel GPU driver to the latest version :o , causing the DR instability.
Is this setting supposed to work on Windows 10 as well ? (I want to keep this version for a while for a number of reasons)

It has a feature to disable auto updates - works for me.

Bummer about Fairlight acting up! Since downgrading and GPU fixes didn't work, try checking for software conflicts or reaching out to Blackmagic support.

downgrading GPU drivers *does* work, but Windows insists on keeping updating the drivers despite the "Do you want automatically download manufacturer' apps and custom icons...." set to "No" as explained by Dwaine earlier in this thread; I have now added "Disable automatic driver updates using Group Policy" (https://www.intowindows.com/enable-or-disable-automatic-driver-updates-on-windows-10/) as an additional measure....let's wait and see if this now effectively prevents Windows from updating the Intel GPU driver again....

Just to note: The Fairlight issue discussed in this thread is related to a specific Surface Pro 7 laptop and Intel GPU driver issue.

Although I do need to see what Resolve 19 does on this hardware. I hope it still works with the driver solution above. Perhaps it will even work with newer drivers. I'll report back in this thread.

The current Resolve 19 Beta 1 continues to work on the Surface Pro 7 with the Intel 30.0.100.9864 driver. It still does not like newer Intel drivers.

Much thanks to Robert Niessner for this:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=195989#p1039748

Because even though I have Win11 Pro, and did the steps above to prevent the Intel driver from updating, the first thing that happened after starting my Surface Pro and testing that Resolve 18.6.6 was still working, is that something updated the Intel driver during my test and crashed Resolve. It may not have been a Windows update, it might have been an Intel app that made that happen. At any rate, the Shutup10 app seems to have that under control.
