Differences between "The Colorist Guide" and the software

PostThu Mar 14, 2024 11:44 am

Hi all.

Whilst I'm quiet, I'm going through all the training books for colour, editing, audio, and vfx in order to fill in any holes in my knowledge, and to get qualified because who doesn't want a free .PDF file?!

I've started with "The Colorist Guide to DaVinci Resolve 18" and and I'm currently on chapter 5 - "Mastering the Node Pipeline" and I've finally decided to make a post here asking about inconsistencies between what the book says and what the software says.

I spotted one or two in the opening chapters and thought nothing of it. I noticed a few more in subsequent chapters and got as far as clicking my "BMD Forums" bookmark in order to post about it, before closing it again.

But I've just hit the tip on page 173 that says that I can enable Live Preview in the gallery panel to see a live update of the image as I hover over the blending modes in a Layer Mixer node's composite mode, but it doesn't update.

Do I just shrug and accept that it's either wrong or BMD changed it?

I'm going to have an exam on these things, so what is "correct" according to the exam, the guidebook or the actual software?

If you find anything else, please add it to that thread. I don't think you'll be asked for that point in the exam.

Hi Uli!

OF COURSE I should have searched for a related thread already. I am a fool! Thank you for the link. Having read through it, it doesn't seem that anyone @BMD is paying a lot of attention to this?

Hi, Uli! I'm back to complai--- comment on another issue I've just found with the training materials, which I will post in the link you kindly provided, but I wanted to say that in my penultimate Resolve Color examination - pass mark 85% - I scored......84%! So close! However, I was absolutely furious because one of the answers I got wrong was DEFINITELY incorrect!

The question asked which node offered blending (composite) modes, and 2 of the options were Layer Mixer nodes and Correction nodes, BOTH of which DO offer blending modes! It was 50/50 and I obviously chose the wrong one!

Happily, in my retake yesterday, I scored a far more respectable 96%!

Blending modes for Correction nodes have been introduced only very recently (18.6 I think) so maybe it got not reflected back into the examination questions database.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Which is not really acceptable, given the fact you need to score pretty high to offer official training yourselves.
