Question about activation

I read in the online shop, that one will receive an activation code and later on, some email with some other code. Now it is still not clear to me, if the machine has to be connected to the internet to activate or for the license to work (always online while working), or if it's just dropping the license file in a folder like with Terragen. As the machine is not online duo to NDA reasons, that would make a purchase pointless, that's why I ask. Anyone knows this for sure (no assumptions, guesses or prayers please)?
