Choppy/Noisy Export when Rendering - Please Help

PostMon Mar 25, 2024 10:30 pm

Hello all.

When I render and export my work, the file seems to be a bit choppy and noisy compared to the original file. My video is recorded in 4k, and I have set my timeline and render settings to 4k as well.

However, the exported files does not look smooth. Any tips on why that is or how I can fix that?

Here is the link to the rendered file for you to see my issue

Looks absolutely normal to me. You should shoot in a higher frame rate for UHD or use ND to get reasonable shutter speeds in daylight. And the fine noise is due to compression in drones, which is easily overwhelmed by high detail and contrast. See here:

Not knowing anything about your system, nor what you use to play back your file, it is impossible to know exact reason. However:

1. Your file is ProRes HQ 700 MB/sec variable bit rate. *CORRECTION: Mb/sec, not MB/sec

2. When I play it on my Win10 system using say VLC or MVP.net playback is choppy. When I play it in Resolve playback is smooth, no noise, tons of detail.

So I am guessing you are using Windows and are playing with regular app which ends up choking on the format that isn't GPU accelerated and file is too demanding on player. Try exporting in H.265 with constant bit rate and settings that will assure GPU accelerated playback.

Thanks for adding that, Alexander.
I was assuming much finer issues, which are the only ones I can see here on a large screen. BTW, it's only close to 700 megabit per second (Mb/s), so like 68 MB/s. If it were really 695 MB/s, I'd assume it to be choppy on quite a few drives.

You are correct, that was my typo (everything else in my life is in MBytes so by habit I keep capitalizing even when it is supposed to be Mbits).

My playback experience is the same as Alexander Dali's, smooth in Resolve and choppy in VLC.

I don't see any issues. Plays identically in PotPlayer and Resolve.

In other words, if hardware natively supports ProRes acceleration, or software handles it efficiently, playback will be way it is supposed to be, otherwise all bets are off. It is adding up. VLC or MPV.net on Windows obviously don't handle it efficiently. I am curious would their M* versions handle it right.

I didn’t use VLC in quite a while, since I had massive sound issues with it. If something isn’t playing in QT player, I use IINA. But I may try VLC later today.

Unfortunately, us Windows users do not have all the cool players you Mac guys do :(

There are pretty good ones for Windows too, but not all are free (neither on Mac).

Only ones I am aware of are VLC and MPV.net so if you have other recommendations I would very much appreciate knowing what they are even if I can't afford them at the moment.

What about PotPlayer (http://potplayer.daum.net)? It came out as our favourite of the free ones under Windows in a pretty extensive test of players on both platforms.

I tested your file in VLC on MacOS too. It plays smoothly, only starting a bit hesitantly. But IQ is just the same as in QT Player or IINA (my favourite under MacOS).

If anybody would like the whole review in German, including professional players, drop me a PM with an email address.
