Using CST for F-Log (Rec.2020) highlights over saturated

PostTue Mar 26, 2024 1:29 pm

I have noticed that when using "film LUT" from Resolve Studio to F-Log, neon light, traffic light or any lights for that matter are oversaturated/pixelated (image falls apart).

I have tied CST for a variety of scened but still havent found a solution:

Project Settings - Color Science: DaVinci YRGB - Timeline Color Space: F-LOG/DaVinciWide Gamut - OutPut Color Space: Rec.709 Gamut 2.4

Color Space Transform - Input Color Sapce: Rec.2020
Input Gamma: Fujifilm F-Log
Output Color Space: Rec.709
Output Gamma: Cineon Film Log

I have also tried changing the timeline Color Space to DaVinci Wide Gamut and using CST to convert to Rec.709 in the end of the node trees, but the results are even worse as the colors falls apart also.

Thanks in advance for the answers.

What happens if you throw out the Film LUT and just color correct manually?

Very well thought, however, I would like to achieve the Kodak 2383 D55 look and for that, I am not capable to color grade and have the same results without using the DaVinci LUTs.

F-Log uses Rec.2020 as color Space and I have noticed that converting to DaVinci WG/Intermediate - which is broader - only makes the quality falls apart.

I could use Rec.709 as Input Color Space and it would resolve the issue, however, the level of saturation is lower and I would have to adjust to about 80% and Color Boost to about 20% however, after raising the saturation over 60 , you start to see separation patterns in colors (don't know how to explain) like in the sky or large areas of one color.

The Resolve film lut designed for cineon is not really intended to be used with any camera as a means of creating a film look. It's actually designed to simulate print film for actual cineon footage. Depending on where you come from, some colors may clip, have negative values, fall outside the range the LUT can cover sanely.

I would recommend grabbing a scene referred film look that has a log space input and outputs in the same log space. There are a few free ones out there.
