Integration for newly opened MotionCam RAW Format?

PostWed Mar 27, 2024 6:40 am

Hello Blackmagic Forums Community,

I am excited to share some news regarding MotionCam's RAW Format! As of today, MotionCam has made its RAW Format open for decoding, unlocking a world of possibilities for users seeking the highest quality in their video projects.

MotionCam stands out as the only Android App that allows users to capture Raw data directly on their mobile devices. With this powerful capability now available for decoding, we are keen to explore potential integrations with editing software, particularly DaVinci Resolve.

We believe that integrating MotionCam's RAW Format directly into DaVinci Resolve could significantly streamline the workflow for many users. While we currently offer the option to render files into ProRes, the direct loading of the mcraw file into DaVinci Resolve would undoubtedly offer a faster and more efficient editing process.

It's just a matter of time before a significant number of users start utilizing MotionCam for its raw capabilities, and we believe that integrating the mcraw format into DaVinci Resolve would be a valuable addition for the filmmaking community.

We kindly ask the Blackmagic Design team and the community here to consider this integration, as we believe it would greatly benefit filmmakers, content creators, and anyone seeking the highest quality in their video projects.

Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to your feedback and support.

Dear Da Vinci developers! Please add format mcraw in Da Vinci resolve! There are already many people who use this format, and we really miss this format in Da Vinci! Please integrate this format!

MC-raw's uptake has exploded recently so I feel it could definitely help in the uptake of DaVinci Resolve. Many filmmakers would absolutely love this addition.

Blackmagic Developers, this would immensely help mobile filmmakers who crave a RAW workflow and the quality that comes with it. MotionCam does something no other app can do, having integration like this would make the process so much better.

I will be interested to see if this becomes a political decision like the choice to exclude Pro Res Raw.

Is Black Magic wanting to port their existing Iphone app to Android and choose to ignore Motion Cam for it?

I haven't seen DCTLs interface with raw footage? So I don't think the Motion Cam devs would have the option to just do it themselves?

The devs are a very small team (2 persons?). I fear they might get attention of RED and Apple. Hope they have licenses for everything they offer. Including Prores conversion and H265. Just a warning.

Andrew is right. As soon as they try to commercialise this, they may get into trouble, even if they may deserve to ask money for their hard work.

Use of ffmpeg ProRes is usually tolerated if all is free, but if you use it for a commercial product, they'll come after you. Cinemartin tried it and the product disappeared soon, the company a bit later.

And what Red Nikon may do to them if they use any compression of RAW is totally unknown at this time.

Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you for sharing your concerns,

MotionCam Pro employs lossless raw compression! We have developed the necessary tools (MotionCam Tools available on our website) to seamlessly convert from mcraw to DNG. However, we believe this process can now be completely bypassed, hence the reason for introducing the decode option.

As for HEVC, MotionCam utilizes hardware codecs that are licensed with the device, and for ProRes, we adhere to the licensing terms through FFmpeg (as clearly stated within the app).

Should you have any further inquiries, please feel free to reach out to us.

Thank you

Good luck with this.

I don't think the HEVC license works like that. Here's a quote taken from a quick search. "Implementation, licenses are also issued by MPEG LA for a range of $0.20 – $1.20/device based on volume. Subscription-based royalties cost $0.025/subscriber. Despite these high licensing costs, HEVC is the second most popular codecs around".

Pretty sure any apps or standalone software enters the under the subscriber model. This includes Resolve most likely.

As for raw, there have been other companies that took out lossless CinemaDNG out of their devices. Kinefinity for example. '

'Starting from March 1, 2021, Kinefinity removes CinemaDNG codec from MAVO LF, MAVO 6K, and TERRA 4K on the current camera line, also drops the planned KRW2.0 codec, for the well-known reason in the industry.''

One could speculate what the well-known reason in the industry is. Rhymes with Ted.

Anyway, good luck with this but don't be surprised if BMD doesn't touch this.

Since Android is the worldwide most used mobile OS, it will be great to integrate the support of this awesome RAW format in Davinci. There are no other true RAW video apps and since mobile filmmaking is gaining momentum every day, this will bring even more users.

Thank you for sharing your insights.

Considering that all Android apps use the hardware HEVC encoder, it raises questions about the licensing structures mentioned. This widespread use suggests that there may be variations in how HEVC licensing operates, especially in the realm of mobile applications.

I guess time will tell ...

Hello,
I'm also intersted to use MCRAW format in da vinci resolve.
It's an ultrafast encode/decode format.
It's an "easy" open source format to add to da vinci resolve.

MotionCam is the only solution for raw video in android smartphone.

This add will start the new revolution of very high professionnal video quality with smartphone.
